Spicy Fig Balls


1 cup died figs, cut fine
1/2 cup water
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg ( don't care for nutmeg and leave it out )
1/4 tsp ginger
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2/3 cup shortening
1/2 cup dark corn syrup
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1tsp. lemon extract

Cook figs in water about five minutes. Set aside to cool. Sift next 6-ingredients together. Mix brown sugar, shortening , cream well together. Stir in syrup. Blend in egg, vanilla and lemon extract. Beat well and add the dry ingredients slowly. Mixing well. Stir in figs. Drop by tablespoons full onto greased cookie sheet. Bake 375 - degrees for 10 - 12 minutes. Makes 4 - dozen
