I must have missed something, because I read the article but didn't see where she mentions how to tell if they are poisonous or not. I love mushrooms, and have some that grow in our yard, but have been afraid to try them, not knowing how to identify the poisonous from non-poisonous.

I found them, thank you so much. I believe we have puffballs in our back yard. We're going to check them tomorrow to know for sure.

Never eat mushrooms unless you know beyond all doubt what you are doing!!! One small piece of poisonous mushroom can be fatal!!!

I have considered taking some that I believe are non-poisonous to the extension office for identification before we try them.

Even the experts have been fooled. I'm very leery about trying mushrooms-unless it's from one that you already tasted and aren't sick and are still living.

We've been talking about ordering some mushroom spores to try to raise our own. I'm too leery to try any of the wild ones.

That's something I've wanted to do for a long time, just don't have the time.

That would be a neat thing to try. I also have thought about it but never have. If someone here does it would be great to how they make out with doing that.

I looked into this a few years ago, some are grown on logs that are inoculated with the spores, some are grown in a soil like medium. In all cases they need a dark damp and cool place to grow (something like a steady 62 to 68 degrees). In any case, if I ever tried this several mushrooms would be left behind to re-seed the growing medium, if possible.

Morel mushrooms are the only wild mushrooms I eat. They are easily identified once you know what to look for, and where to find them. Rolled in corn meal and quick fried makes a prime side dish or snack.
