I have been looking into growing mushrooms. Morels and some other types. I wanted to know if you could preseve them before I go thru all the trouble of growing them. They have kits where you can put the spore in logs and they grow. I want to put them up to have later on. Can you dry them in a dehydrator or freeze them? Also is there any good sites to look at regarding mushrooms. I have looked at mushroompeople.com. And what are some good ones to grow besides morel.

I dehydrate mushrooms all the time. Seems to work pretty well.

How dry do they need to be so they do not mold? And how do you store them. I know I am full of questions today. I got it from my son. lol He rubbed off on me before gouing to headstarts this morning I guess.

Mine had a leathery texture to them. I vacumn seal mine. Not sure of the shelf life though. I'm glad you're full of questions. That's one of the reasons this forum is here, I have a lot of questions too. When others ask questions I realize that I would like to know that too. Smile So keep asking, you're asking questions I don't think of, but when you ask it's like, yeah, I would like to know that too. Smile

I dehydrate my mushrooms until they are crispy.  Then I store them in an air tight container of some kind.  I usually re-use those quart size Gatorade bottles or even those clear juice bottles that you get at the store.  Both work well, but the Gatorade bottles have a nice big opening which makes them easier to clean and sterilize.

Remember some mushrooms, morels for instance, MUST be cooked before you eat them.  If I am drying that kind of mushroom I usually blanch them for a few minutes before loading up the dehydrator.
