Seeds starting to sprout Empty Seeds starting to sprout

Post by Sonshine Fri Feb 01, 2013 11:27 am

Some of my seedlings have sprouted. So far I have 30 tomatoe seedlings. Ten of each, tommy toes, brandywine and amish paste. I have 8 crook neck squash sprouts, oregano, basil, feverfew and valarium. We have several pepper seeds planted, but they haven't sprouted yet, along with lavendar and echinacea. Hopefully they'll sprout soon. We'll be starting more seeds this week end.

It's too early here to start seeds. Another month and I should hopefully be able to start.

It is exciting to have the seeds start to pop up out of the soil. It is too early here to start seeds. Another couple of weeks at least before I start mine.

Are any of you planting any cool weather crops, like cabbage, sweet peas etc? Is it too early to start those there? I've never gardened in the north, so not sure when your last frost date is, but there's several plants that do well with frost.

Garden is frozen solid, so there's nothing I can plant.

How long till last frost in your area? By the time it thaws out, you can have some of your cold tolerant plants already started to set out.

I normally start plants in the garden at the end of March or so. And, I start tomatoes, peppers, etc at the beginning of March. I have a chart I made last year that shows when I can start everything either inside or out.

The plants that I start in the garden then are just cold weather plants, like peas, onions, etc. But this year, it's just not warming up. We're colder than normal. We've been in the 20s most nights as well. I'm in South Jersey.

I have some seeds that I've started in the house, but got a late start w/them. But, w/as cold as it's been, I'm not overly worried about them. Some of them have sprouted, but not all of them.

It's been too cold to even think about starting anything here yet. I also usually start my stuff the end of March or beginning of April. I think we'll have cold much longer this year since it was warmer longer last year.

I'm thinking of buying one of those little greenhouse shelving unit things for my patio this year. I'll probably get some flat paver stones to put on the shelves to help keep the plants warmer overnight.

My arthritis is in a major flare-up so I haven't really thought much about getting any seeds started yet. It will be a while before I can really do any physically demanding activities.

They are predicting some more possibly heavy snow coming in this weekend too so that has me holding off starting anything even cold hardy plants.

I've heard of people putting a heating pad under their starter pots. Since I'm in central Georgia, I think I'm the farthest south of anyone else. Our last frost date is listed as March 15th. We've already had temps in the 70's, although we're suppose to have a short cold snap the next couple of days. I'm figuring that will be our last one. I usually start my indoor plants sometime in January. That way things like my tomatoes have a really good start. So far we've got lettuce, spinach, carrots, beets, brussel sprouts, cabbage, potatoes and onions planted. Oh, and English peas (I grew up calling them sweet peas), and they are coming up really well. I just transferred some of my tomatoes, peppers and yellow squash to my greenhouse. We have a heat lamp out there in case the temps drop too much, but I was running out of room in my house. Smile

We are having what I hope is our last cold spell (a week or more with low temps reaching into and below the 20's) I usually direct seed brussel sprouts, beans, peas, squash, and etc. The only thing I start early is tomatoes.
