ok not actually a pet but an animal question just the same
The tree that the tornado took out in the front yard houses a wood pecker nest in part of the limb. when they go cut it down I am afraid her babies will get killed. Is there any way to rescue them and still have her take care of them. We are afraid they will fall out as the limb is facing down wards. We can not get under it to catch it as it is to big. I have been watching her for a few weeks and she is a good mother and the father is a good father. They have been at it and they hatched last week. Any ideas?

I don't have any idea. Maybe do an internet search or call a vet?
Re: ok not actually a pet but an animal question just the same
I am now the proud mother of 4 baby wood peckers. I hope the mother comes back. The phone company came out today and cut the tree. I did not say anything to them about the birds. The man ( he noticed them) took his time and cut the limb carefully and when he was handing it to the other guy three of them fles out of there. The other one was hanging on for dear life. The nest was upside down. (made that way) We got the other one out and we put them in a shoe box with some hambuger meat. They are now in the tree on the big limb that is still attached to the tree. The mother is flying around and looking for them. I do not think they will be to much of a problem as they are already flying. Rebekka rought them in the house until they got thru with the tree and they were flying around my living room. There are three boys and one little girl. They are so cute. I hope we can save them and I think that we can as they are already trying to fly.

oohhh! that is so cute!!! lol
hope they survive!!
I had an episode with a hummingbird the other night. Had the back door open and it flew into the kitchen/dining room area.. I opened the doors and windows and tried to guide it back outside with a broom. It perched on a shelf for a little while, again flew around up against the ceiling for awhile, then it kind of did a nose dive and landed on the floor. I picked it up and put it out on the bird feeder.. after awhile it recovered and flew off..

Found on more. I do not know if it is a boy or a girl as it will not come out of the nest. I went out to get the mail and I heard it cheaping on the porch. I lifted the log and it came to the hole. I put the log in the tree by where the babies were. She has taken them off somewhere. I saw her with a bug in her mouth flying up the tree. I think they are doing good.

woohoo, Mother Nature prevailed against the storm! Funny how God made mommas so smart, eh?
Re: ok not actually a pet but an animal question just the same
She has taken the last one out of the box this morning. She has got them up in the tree and they are chirpping away.

I love humming birds. They have not made it here yet. They let me know when they get here so I fill up their feeder. They buzz us on the porch.
Re: ok not actually a pet but an animal question just the same
We were just sitting out on the back deck for awhile, and a hummingbird buzzed by a couple of times. Didn't stop at the feeder though.. I wonder if it was the same one

I'll have to watch for bees this year at mine lol did you see the pics on the bee forum at how many were on one frame?
Re: ok not actually a pet but an animal question just the same
Yes, I did! I showed my dh all of your pictures, including the bees.. He said it looks like there is quite a bit involved in having bees..and a lot to learn... But it looks like you are going to have a lot of honey!
Re: ok not actually a pet but an animal question just the same
hubby studied for three years and has a bee keeper to help him. We might get some honey this year but being their first year we may get a little as they have to have it to eat and it cost so much to feed them.
Re: ok not actually a pet but an animal question just the same
We did it. 4 out of 5 babies made it. I found on of the girls dead in the box. Wesley buried it because he felt bad for it. But 4 out of 5 is not bad at all. WooHoo
