Anyone getting ready to start seeds?
Joe and I are going to get some tomatoes and peppers started this weekend and was wondering if anyone else has started any yet.
Re: Anyone getting ready to start seeds?
End of February for me. When I can, I go away for the last weekend of February, and I don't have anyone to care for them when I'm gone.

Re: Anyone getting ready to start seeds?
I'm starting in about 2 weeks here near Savannah, Ga. I do have a question though. I have had zero luck with Tomatoes. Can anyone help me out. I prefer to start everything from seed. no starter plants for this guy. As well as I do everything organic. Seeds and all.

How do you usually start them? Tomatoes need a soil temp of at least 70 degrees in order to germinate. I've been starting mine from seeds for several years now. We just put the seeds in a small container filled with starter soil and put a grow light over them.

starting with known good seeds is step one. If you buy them check the date, they must be less than three years old. If you have saved your seeds, be sure you have followed the proper method. Since these are "wet" seeds they require a fermentation method. (http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/seedsave/2002084456024410.html)
The starter media must be kept moist, and warm. (about 70 degrees) as soon as the second set of leaves emerge you must feed your seedlings since starter media is devoid of nutrients. This is where some kind of balanced liquid fertilizer must be used. Transplant your seedlings into pots containing a good growing media (pot soil) at the onset of the third set of leaves.
Hardening off before transplanting into the garden is the hardest part. Daily the new plants must be exposed to outside temperatures for 4 to 6 hours, but taken in at night, or covered and left outside.
That's about it, after three weeks of hardening off they are ready to plant, if your garden is ready.
Re: Anyone getting ready to start seeds?
Thanks for all your help. I have a new question. I am doing container growing of potatoes. they are now about as tall as I am. Am I ok to prune them and if so how much would be too much?
Re: Anyone getting ready to start seeds?
?? potatoes as tall as you ??
too much nitrogen and not nearly enough phosphorus or potassium the above ground growth should only be about 24 inches. Rather than pruning, bury all but 10 to 15 inches and keep well watered
