War with the skin
``It is a war with my skin,'' says John Updike, the American novelist famous for his Rabbit series ( Rabbit, Run, Rabbit Redux. Rabbit is Rich etc), on being a psoriasis-affected person. Updike lived with the disease – that causes scaly lesions and a repulsive redness on the skin – throughout his life, for 77 years.
Psoriasis is an auto-immune disorder which results in unchecked growth of cells. Only rarely it turns out to be life-threatening. But the emotional trauma that the patient has to undergo is beyond comparison.
Psoriasis affects people irrespective of their age, gender or geographical location. It also deteriorates the emotional balance of the affected too. The symptoms appear on the skin, the outermost part of the body; hence they are visible to everybody. Many psoriasis patients have revealed that they always experience an alienation and they can see a repulsive look in the eyes of onlookers – be it strangers, friends or acquaintances.
Deformity of skin thus affects the employment opportunities, personal, professional and social life of the patient. They have to take extra efforts to make themselves acceptable among others and it puts a heavy pressure on their mental condition. The psychological distress takes a toll on their health and it may lead to other physical problems too. The medical fraternity is continuing their research on a complete cure for this disease. Among the various approaches to curtail the disease, the methods used in psoriasis ayurvedic treatment is said to be very effective for some patients .
