Old dog with skin condition

Old dog with skin condition
We have a 12 yr old sheltie named "Lil Bit". He has some kind of skin condition that is making his skin really dry and it's flaking off. Anyone have any suggestions for a natural remedie? Thanks.

Try some oil, I think corn oil? in his dog food. Really good for dry flaky skin.

I'll give it a try. My Dad said it sounded like some kind of yeast infection, but my other dogs don't have any problems, so not sure.

You can try fish oil in the diet. She may just have dry skin. Or it could be a reaction to flea or mite bites. It could be yeast too...even if the other dogs don't have it. If it's real bad I would have a vet take a look. Is she scratching at it? What part of the body is it on?

Re: Old dog with skin condition
ok this is not natural but I have had a couple strays with skin conditions and before I could rehome them I did this. ( worked with the local animal rescue for a while)Make sure you have them tied to something first is really important here.( had to play catch a few times) Take burnt motor oil and put it on them. Let it sit for 5 min no longer and wash them in sauve shampoo. The orginal brown kind is best but any will work. It takes care of mange and that sort of problems too. Do not do this but once either. I do not think it is that good for them. I had one that nothing I tried including the vet meds would take care of it. someone told me to use burnt motor oil and it cleared it up. Also I have had great luck with the sauve and fleas. But a garlic gel pill everyday for big dogs and everyother day for smaller dogs works good too.
Re: Old dog with skin condition
It's mostly on his hind quarters. The other two aren't affected. They're inside dogs, so not really much trouble with fleas or other critters.
Amy, doesn't the suave dry their skin out more? I'm always worried about using people shampoo on the dogs because I'm afraid it'll dry their skin out. Unless I use conditioner.

I have had no problem but I wash my pom only once a week unless he has been playing with the pigs then he just stinks. He loves to go out there and play with the babies.
