Got our grain mill and the wheat berries!
I haven't opened them yet. Waiting for Joe to come home to open them. Too heavy for me, since I'm on a weight lifting limit, but I'm really excited. Guess Joe is too, since he posted asking for a good supplier of wheat berries.

Congrats and we'll need to see pictures of you enjoying your new mill.

Here's a link to the site we got our grainmill.
http://countrylivinggrainmills.com/
It has a picture of the mill on the page. Joe also got an extra bur for corn and beans. Before we can use it though, Joe's going to have to find something to bolt it down on. Then I'll make sure he gets some pictures of our first time grinding our own flour. Oh, he also ordered some soft white wheat and some white corn today.

Forgot to add, ours is not aluminum, but made of cast iron. It's very heavy, but Joe figured it would hold up better.
Re: Got our grain mill and the wheat berries!
I had meant to post this sooner, but we got in 50 pounds of soft white wheat and 50 pounds of white corn. The wheat is definitely easier to grind than the hard wheat, but I still didn't get much of a rise on our bread.

Ok, now I'm jealous!
You got one of the mills I dream of owning! The other is the Diamant mill from Lehman's.
I can't afford either, but maybe some day . Both mills I own are electric, so if we lose power I can't grind my wheat.

Sonshine, sounds like you are using you new mill, enjoy the learning process cause, for us at least, it's been a whole lot of fun. It took MissKitty three tries to get the Spelt Wheat biscuits rising like her white ones (she used baking powder) but... all attempts tasted great! Have you noticed how much fresher the bread made with freshly ground/milled flour tastes?
We haven't made many loaves of sandwich type bread (and they didn't rise like white flour), in fact not many loaves of bread at all as it's just the two of us and we have had more focus on flat/skillet breads, making just enough for the day. Last time MissKitty baked biscuits she took some of the dough and rolled it out like a tortilla then cooked it on my cast iron griddle. It doubled, at least if not more, in thickness and made a great sandwich with a egg and sausage patty between it. Was much tastier the next morning than the biscuits were.

Re: Got our grain mill and the wheat berries!
I am enjoying the grain mill. It's going to be fun figuring out how to make my bread rise some with fresh ground flour. We still haven't ground any corn to make corn meal yet, but maybe we can get a chance one day next week. We've been so busy trying to get the garden in that everything else has sort of taking a back seat to it, but today we finally got our veggie garden in. Next week Joe's going to till up a place for me to plant some stuff for the critters. I'll be planting corn, sunflower seeds and peanuts. I understand that goats like peanut hay and figure we can get the peanuts and give the hay to the goats. I also have a few more herbs I want to put in my herb garden. I found some stevia at walmart today, so grabbed some. I also got another rosemary plant, mine didn't make it through the winter for some reason. My sage, oregano, thyme and lavandar are all doing great, as it my mint and bee balm.

How is the learning process (with the new mill) coming along?

Re: Got our grain mill and the wheat berries!
Thanks for asking. I still can't get it to rise the way I would like, but the bread taste good. It makes wonderful gravy and biscuits. I really need to grind some corn and try making some cornbread soon, but with the tennis elbow, I've been holding off on doing any more grinding for now. Hopefully, if I behave myself and limit the use of my right arm for a few weeks it'll mend and I can get back to grinding our wheat and corn.
