Hidden Spools quilt Empty Hidden Spools quilt

Post by mountainmama Tue Apr 22, 2014 10:10 pm

Over a year ago, I started a Hidden Spools quilt (also known as the King's X) but put it away as it was so time consuming. Well, I dragged it out again and have been working on it. I'm amazed at how many scraps I'm able to use! I had a box of scraps taking up space in my sewing room, and have made a significant dent in that.

Other quilters I've talked to say more people are doing scrap quilts due to increased prices of fabric (and other things). I've never been crazy about the scrappy look, but I think this quilt will be fine once finished. In fact, the more different colors/designs, the better it looks.

I know, I'm rambling. It's just that this project has inspired me. Quilts were never my thing, but now I can see that all those little scraps add up quickly and using them up sure beats spending more money at the fabric store.

Most definitely beats the price of fabric now. I'm sure it will look great when you finish it. Wink

My son is wanting a denim quilt, I have a bunch of old jeans saved to cut up and make him one. It's just finding the times to get going on it. I'll probably just use a flat sheet for the backing. I'm not sure if I'll add any batting as it will be very heavy just from the weight of the denim.

I have several books of scrap quilting.  I really like that kind of project myself, but it has been over a year since I have had time to quilt.

What I did was make the smaller squares and store them in a big ziplock bag. Then I got it out later and joined them into bigger squares. I might put it away again and just keep working a little at a time.

You need to be sure and post pics of your progress.  It might get some of the rest of us back quilting again.

That's something that I've never learned how to do. But, I'd love to learn one day.

My first quilt took me like 7 years from start to finish lol. I would work on it and then put it away for a while Rolling Eyes Then when it came time I hand quilted it, but I got some of my Amish friends together and had a quilting party Cool It was so much fun! I don't know what you plan on doing as far as quilting but a party is always fun! Since then I have made several quilts! I really like a rag quilt they are easy and pretty fast and it all can be done with machine. I think a denim rag quilt would be pretty! I love to quilt!!!
