sewing a canning apron....
I would like to sew a canning apron. All the patterns I have found only go up to Large (FP #222- this is the one I want to do-Candleonthehill sells it)
I fall in between a large and ex. Having never done any sewing before, not even sure I could do it. How would I go about making it, and sized to fit me if I purchased the patttern. I would really, really appreciate any help.
Thank you in advance.

Re: sewing a canning apron....
seems odd replying to a sewing question, but both Mom and my Wife sew most of their clothes, and have for years. Since you are only making an apron, just make the strings longer than the pattern says, and trim them to fit. Not sure how that apron fastens, but temporary fasteners can be made from adhesive backed velcro pieces.
Re: sewing a canning apron....
If the fabric portion isn't going to be wide enough just increase the width by placing the pattern piece a few inches away from the fold of the fabric and cut the piece as directed. Most aprons have you place the pattern piece on the center fold of your fabric so it should be easy to increase the width. I hope you follow the way I'm trying to explain this, it does sound a bit confusing.

Re: sewing a canning apron....
OK, I just looked at the apron you want to make. You can increase the size the way I suggested above but you'll also have to increase the back portions as well. To do the back sections you'll need paper, cut the pattern piece from top to bottom and tape the sections to the paper leaving the correct amount of increased space open between the pieces. You will cut the back piece between the back tab and just before the pattern piece goes up to the shoulder seams. You will want to add 1/2 of the increased amount that you increased the front by. So if you add 2 inches to the front piece you will only add 1 inch to the back piece. You will still be increasing the back by the same 2 inches when you are finished. I hope this makes sense.

Re: sewing a canning apron....
Thank you Patrice for taking time to explain how to do it.
While I am greatful for the explaination, I have a hard time understanding.
I have always been a person who learns by seeing, not by reading how do it.
I will have to forget about making it. Hopefully I will find a pattern that has more size options. I really liked that one, though. Oh Well.... not meant to be.
Thanks to all who replied.

I have a suggestion....get yourself a sleeveless jumper (one that looks like the apron you want to make) from a resale shop or garage sale then cut the back to look like the apron pictured on the pattern. Use a zig day stitch around the area you cut to keep the fabric from unraveling. Use the fabric you cut off to make to tie strips and sew them to the back sides so you can tie the apron around you.

if a video would help, and you are willing to go to the lengths of this demonstration

This will likely require some investment of money and time

Did you get your apron made? Are you happy with it?
I bought a jumper at a thrift shop, took it apart and used it to make a bibbed apron. Fabric is so expensive so this turned out to be a very economical apron. The bodice of the apron had an appliqued apple which I used for the bib.
