I have heard you go also use dawn dish soup for this, so I'm wondering if any kind of soap will work?

I think you could use any kind of dish soap. We throw soapy water on our rose bushes and rose of sharon to kill aphids.

I would think even cheap shampoo would work because it made to remove oil from your hair and you are trying to cut the plant's protective oil.
