Refrigeration without electricity
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pot-in-pot_refrigerator
The pot-in-pot refrigerator or zeer (Arabic: الزير) is a refrigeration device which keeps food cool without electricity by using evaporative cooling. A porous outer earthenware pot, lined with wet sand, contains an inner pot (which can be glazed to prevent penetration by the liquid) within which the food is placed. The evaporation of the outer liquid draws heat from the inner pot.
Although the principle behind the device has been known for centuries, one modern device was developed by lecturer Mohammed Bah Abba for use in modern Nigeria and distributed by his company, Mobah Rural Horizons.[1] The device was reinvented by English inventor Emily Cummins in 2006, for which she won a Female Innovator of the Year for 2007 from the British Female Inventors and Innovators Network[2] as well as a £12,000 sponsorship from NESTA.[3][4]
The devices can be constructed with simple components and are beneficial for areas of the developing world where electricity is unreliable or non-existent

Re: Refrigeration without electricity
I saw this once on a documentary that was done in the Holy Land. It was neat. Isn't this the basic principle of those stoneware crocks that you can fill with water and ice in the morning and get icy cold water all day? The evaporation keeps the water cool I think.

Yes, I've seen this in different places online several times. I think there might be some Youtube videos about it.
