Got my chicks ordered Empty Got my chicks ordered

Ordered them from TSC. 10 Buff Orpington straight run and 15 Buff Orpington pullets. I figure in the straight run I'll get at least one rooster. After they grow some I'll be butchering all but about a dozen hens and one rooster. We also got our fencing for our new goat pastures. Now I just have to find the seed I'm looking for to grow some grasses in the pasture.

Some people get excited about a big fancy car, some people get excited about fine new clothes, while others get all in a tizzy about an overseas trip but us homesteaders get excited about an order of new baby chicks. I love it!!!!! Smile

LOL We're a rare breed. I was just as excited about getting our fencing to make a new pasture area for our goats so we can put them on a rotational system. Most people buy big tv's ect with their income tax refund, we buy chicks and fencing. Smile

I understand how you feel Sonshine. I remember years back when I ordered my chicks and they came. My daughter, her friend and I went right down to the feed store and picked them up. It was so cute to see the little friend with this baby chicks. She lived right down the road from us but had NEVER seen a baby chick before. I showed her how to pick them out of the box and put their little beaks in the water. I felt a wierd sense of satifaction doing that with her.

Ty's very excited about them. The last ones we got, my oldest female sheltie decided she was going to play mama to them. She watched every move they made. When they grew up they would give her some of the scraps we put out for them. The other dogs won't go near them, because they don't tolerate the dogs, but they sure do love Precious. I'm wondering if Precious will do the same with this batch.

The first time ever I had chicks my german shepard thought he would mother them too but unfortunately he smothered all but two of them. He was very protective of the chicken flock though. Once the neighbors dog had killed three and had one in his mouth and the shephard took out after him, chased him off and then laid over the hen until I could get there. She was okay but had a really bad puncture wound in breast. I took her in the house, cut the feathers away, cleaned it with peroxide and put some hay, food and water in the bathtub and that is where she spent the night. Fortunately we had two bathrooms because my kids were forbidden to go in that bathroom - I didn't need a chicken running all over the house. It's funny, that is the one hen in the flock that would come and sit on the back of the lawn chair if I was sitting outside and she followed me everywhere.
