Storing seeds

The idea of storing seeds like people do food does not
cross the minds of many people. Seeds are to most people
a raw product. They would rather have the finished end
product. But seeds are far more than a raw product,
they are life, itself.

In times past of turmoil, seeds became so valuable they
were used as money. Think about that and its implications
for today. Have we become so advanced that we can
all now get along without them?

There is some company out there that sells a 5 gallon bucket of diffrent seeds. (Whatyou are suppost to have to live) and they gaurentee it to store just like they are for 5 years atleast. My FIL saves seeds off of everything he grows and puts them up every year. I have a stock pile too but they are in the freezer so if I lose power I do not know what to do with them.

Does the company sell the seeds as a survival garden? If so, I think I posted a link to them here. If it's not the same one, and you have a link, could you post it for us? Thanks.

We've been practicing saving our own seed for several years now, having switched to all open-pollinated garden stock.
It seems as though each plant has its own unique set of preferences as to how it's seeds are harvested, cured and stored.
There are several good books out addressing this topic, but hands-on is priceless.
My strategy as I learned about seeds was to start with a dozen or so old garden variety stand-by's, mastering each of them before adding a couple new things each year. Corn, potatoes, beans, tomatoes, melons, squash, peppers, cabbage, carrots, spinach, lettuce, onions and radishes will go a long way toward staving off hunger come winter. After mastering seed saving with those varieties, add some new.
