A new handle for an old knife
Well, the thumb is healing nicely, and I am trying to get back to using it normally. Since I am not allowed to work with stitches I decided to try to do a little out in the shop today. I have an old paratrooper knife, purchased some 25 years ago. The original handle was made of little leather disks, pressed onto the handle. It looked like this one when new...
Time, neglect and a few mice pretty well destroyed the handle and the finish of the blade.
Strolling through the woods a while back I picked up some Hickory, and a couple of bones from what appear to have been deer.
Some time with the bandsaw and drill press got me to that stage, then more time on the belt sander, and you can begin to see how it will look when finished.
Some more sanding and finish work will be coming in the near future.

Re: A new handle for an old knife
This goes to show you can put a new handle on any old knife with what ever you have laying around. If you do choose wood, make it a hard wood, pines and similar are too soft to hold up to regular use.

That's quite interesting looking.
