Some of our hen eggs have a cluster of egg shell on the egg. It looks like bumps of eggshell. I have noticed this on several eggs when I'm washing them. Can any of you tell me what this is, what causes it and what we can do for the eggs to be smooth.

Some times the shell where this bumpy area is will be thin enough to break when I pick it up.

Thanks. There's a picture below. I hope you can see the textured area I'm talking about. It's on the two eggs in front.

How long have they been laying? When they first start laying you will get some shells that are less than perfect. After they've laid for awhile it seems to pretty much work itself out, although you'll still have some now and then. If the shell is thin, are they getting enough calcium? You may want to crush some eggshells and feed it back to them. Just make sure it's crushed pretty fine so they don't get a taste for egg or they may start eating the eggs they lay. I've never had a hen that did that, but have heard of others who have.

Thank you Sonshine. The hens have been laying since the late part of last fall. We feed them all the egg shells that we have along with some crushed oyster shells.

The shells are just odd looking and I wondered what is causing them to be like that. I think it may just be one hen laying these eggs.

Thanks for the link. Going to check it out.

The eggs look like the pictures labeled as pimples. Our eggs have a cluster of egg shells in little round pimple looking things. The article said that it could be the breed of chicken. The hens act like they are in good health. None of them are droopy or laying around. So I'm hoping that it's the breed. There was mention of too much calcium. We feed most all the egg shells we use back to the chickens along with the crushed oyster shells so it could be that. We may cut back and see what happens.
