Compost Help

Does any one have any ideas on how to keep animals out of the compost. Not only my childrens dogs but the coons, opposums, skunks, and the wild dogs are getting in it. Hubby put in some fish bones and guts and buried them. It did not take long for them to get in it and take it out.

He took an old trampoline frame with the net on it and put it around the compost with the net on the bottom half. They are still getting in it and they have even left a few presents of thier own in there. They seem to like the vegetable peelings and fish waste that is put in there.

Any ideas will help Thank you in advance.

Katrina was doing some research to see how to keep cats away from our chicken house. They suggested get cutting of sticker bushes and laying around the area. I guess the animals don’t like stickers. Also cyan pepper is supposed to be a good thing to use. You may also want to try getting an old VCR tape and stringing the tape around the pile. Make sure its taut that way when the wind blows it creates a unique sound that deters critters. If all else fails build a chicken wire vault! LOL

once they get a free snack it's hard to stop them. I never use any meat or fish trimmings in my compost for that reason. The "cleanings" are buried well away from the compost pile. I read recently that fencing laid flat on the ground would deter wild animals from crossing into an area they are not wanted. Worth a try if ya have some unused fencing.

A chicken wire bottom and cover will keep all but the smaller rodents out of the compost
