Tis the season

One of the most exciting times of the year is here. Spring has arrived. The seed catalogs that we all drooled over in January and February have long since been discarded, the stock that was ordered has arrived and the early plantings are done. This time of year when all the dreams of fresh fruits and veggies from the garden start to take form. Asparagus springs forth, as do the seedlings of squash, pumpkin, and cucumber. The earliest green of carrot tops catch the morning rays, as we wake to find dew soaked fields instead of frost. Among all of Gods blessings I find the simple act of faith in planting a seed to be most wondrous. Take the lowly kernel of corn, just one kernel can grow a single plant with two, three, and occasionally four ears of corn. Each ear holding hundreds of kernels just like that single one that was planted those many weeks ago. If the seed from one ear fills a patch with new plants filled with even more ears, why should we not save some for the next planting season...

Just the meanderings of my mind, I do so enjoy the spring planting season...

I wonder what the city folk look forward to?? shopping perhaps? a Pity really most of my co-workers, and even some of my neighbors do not plant a garden, preferring instead those easily prepared pre-packaged food-like substances that are microwaved to perfection They seem to exist only to earn a paycheck, so that they can spend the paycheck and then some, only to repeat the process the next month, or even the next week. Never a care given to how they are fed, or why they are never satisfied, but also never tending the fields, nor the herds, nor flocks that are the source of our sustenance.

While reading this, I especially like your mention of a single kernel of corn producing so many more. As Christians we should be more like the seeds we plant. We're just one person, but like that kernel of corn, when we are obedient to God and allow him to tend to us we too will reproduce a new crop of God's children.

I love this time of year. It is always an amazement to me how a tiny seed can become a sturdy fruit bearing plant. I love growing things. I love planting, and taking care of my plants, looking and planning toward the harvest time. What a miracle it is to see things grow and produce fruit. Thank God this is one of the many miracles of life.

Amen, Rohn. It is truely one of the greatest miricles, and IMHO ranks high among the gifts God gives us.

We have a very small garden (yard) but we still plant what we can. First, I like that we can grow what we eat from a seed, which is awesome, as you mentioned. I also like the health benefits of growing organically. Thirdly, it is so much cheaper to grow than to buy from the supermarket. I can buy a head of lettuce or for the same cost, a package of lettuce seeds...
