Our Garden Empty Our Garden

Post by Sonshine Sun Jun 27, 2010 1:14 am

So far we've been getting squash and cucumbers out of our veggie garden, but our corn is shoulder height and starting to tassle. For some reason our green beans didn't do well. Not sure if birds got the seed or not, but we're replanting them this week-end. We have dug up a few potatoes, need to get the rest of them up soon. My herb garden is doing pretty good this year. I just dehydrated some oregano today. I have some basil ready to harvest. Still have a ways to go for my sage, dill and rosemary. My parsley is doing well and should be able to start using it soon. My lavendar came back great.

How's everyone else's garden doing?

Ours started off pretty good, but then it got very hot all of a sudden and the grasshoppers took over after it started raining this summer. I got more tomatoes this year than last and have gotten a few normal sized ears of corn, the beans were taken over by the grasshoppers before they could get very many blooms on them,so they are a total loss, we have five pumpkins that came from a volunteer plant that grew into the garden from out side in the compost pile.LOL Onions aren't much either. Oh, Well we will try again next year. God gives us what we need. cheers

Our beans haven't done well this year either. Joe replanted them, so I'm still hoping to get something out of them. Our corn should be ready to pick in a week or so. This is the first year we've had much luck with corn. Joe picked some blueberries the other day. We only have 4 bushes, and this is the first year they had fruit. We only got about a half a pint so far, but they are loaded, so hopefully we'll get some more. We plan on planting more bushes next year.

We've had a lot of grasshoppers this summer too. Those big, black and red ones that just destroy everything in their way. They've ruined our beans.

We just planted some more Louisiana Purple Pod "green" beans, yellow squash, zucchini, butternut squash, cucumbers and set out eight more tomato plants. I hope we have a better yield from these than our summer garden.

It's been so hot and dry here that we've had a hard time keep everything watered. I dread seeing our next month's water bill.

I hope your later gardens do well.
