There were two ducks that set on the nest and hatched four ducklings. The ducklings are about two weeks old. Today Hubby let them out of the pen to play in the kiddie pool we have set up for them. After they had gotten out of the pool the two mother ducks attacked one of the ducklings. They only attacked one of the babies. They pecked it and rolled/knocked it around in the dirt. Hubby heard the commotion and ran to the pen to see what was going on. He rescued the baby and put it in a cage. It looked almost dead but in a little while it was up and running around again.

In a couple of hours Hubby let it go back to the other ducklings snd the mommas took right up with it. I'm afraid if this happens when we are not in earshot the mommas will kill the baby.

Do any of you know why the mother ducks would attack a baby like that? Hubby said they gave it a spanking. I told him there is a difference in a spanking and a beating. LOL

Thank you for any info you can give me to help keep this baby so it can reach maturity.
