HELP! My poor buck is getting beat up
My ladies aren't being very nice to the new buck we got. Poor little guy gets butted all over the pen when we put him in with them. The two kids (does 7 months old) do ok with him (he's 4 months old) but their momma is rough with him and I'm afraid she's going to hurt him. What's the best way to integrate him with them?
Re: HELP! My poor buck is getting beat up
They will fight it out. They are showing dominace. My does would be mean to the buck or an of our weathered males. They were there first and they are letting them know who is top dog. They will do that for the first few weeks and then get over it. Just at feeding times after that. They will not hurt him just bruise him a little and his pride alot. When he gets bigger them he might take them on. I even had a doe that was knocked around by my first doe when she came here and they were from the same people I just got one one week then the other the next. They are funny that way. They will have to get use to him.
Re: HELP! My poor buck is getting beat up
If those does have horns they CAN hurt a 4 month old buckling. When we integrate a new goat into a herd we pen him/her up by themselves for a few days where the others can smell him/her but not get to them. Then we will put him in a pen that is beside the others where they can touch noses, but not get to one another without intention. After a few days we can usually put everyone together without too many mishaps. But to throw one in with the rest ~ well, frankly, I wouldn't feel comfortable unless that one had someplace they could go to get away. One should have no more than six goats on an acre of land to keep parasites in reasonably check. An acre should give the fella some room to get away if need be.

Right now we have set up a pen right next to their pen. He also has a separate place in the barn that the girls can see him and smell him, but can't get to him. How long should we keep them separated like that?
Re: HELP! My poor buck is getting beat up
Do any of the other goats have horns? If so, I would integrate when you go to feed them for a few days and see what happens. He's undoubtedly a little fella just weaned from his momma and is pretty lonely. Be sure and give him lots and lots of attention.
Re: HELP! My poor buck is getting beat up
Yes, they all have horns, well, except for poor little Brownie, his hasn't come in yet. He does get a lot of attention though. He's Ty's goat and Ty goes out and loves on him and brings him bread, Brownie's favorite treat.
Re: HELP! My poor buck is getting beat up
with the horns you really will have to keep a close watch. We have generally kept the kids away from our Oreo, the only one with horns. She's been around them since they were born, but we will be integrating them all sometime this week. But, keep in mind that these kids are still with their mommas and they will protect the kids. By the time they are weaned Oreo will learn to ignore them. But, butting is a natural instinct and when one is without horns and all the rest have them... it can be somewhat dangerous. That's why we dehorn all our kids. Oreo was given to us and she is the only one with them. Poor Brownie.
Re: HELP! My poor buck is getting beat up
Brownie actually does good with the 7 month old does, it's their momma that really tries to get him. We're thinking of getting either another buck or a wether to place with him.
Re: HELP! My poor buck is getting beat up
You could put those 7 month does with him if you don't mind their being bred at 7 months (which is a real possibility). Another buck would just end up in fighting I expect, but not if they were about the same age (if you can stand the smell ... ugh). Otherwise, I love my wethers.
Re: HELP! My poor buck is getting beat up
If we put him with the 7 month olds, won't the momma get lonely?
one happy family
Well they seem to have taken care of it themselves. The nanny and girls have been hitting his fence and rubbing on it they have broken some of the galvanized welds. I went out one day last week and one of the girls was in his pen. Now they all seem to get along. He still likes his stall in the barn but can go between and be with the ladies. [img][/img]
