We're getting a buck Empty We''re getting a buck

Post by Sonshine on Tue May 19, 2009 1:38 am

We have a nanny and her 2 kids, both does, right now. Saturday we spotted a buck we're going to get this week. Our ladies are African Pygmies, the buck is basically a mutt, but has a lot of pygmy in him.

When I first thought about getting goats I wanted a small dual purpose one. In researching them I stumbled upon the pygmies. Many told me that pygmies weren't good for anything other than meat, but I disagree with that. Anyway, here's a nice link for anyone who may be interested in getting African pygmies:

I know why they smell that way too. That's why I don't have a buck Laughing

Yeah, I know they smell, which is why we didn't originally get one. But if I want to get some babies, gotta have a buck.

You can always "borrow" a buck. We bought one for breeding last fall and sold him when we were "done". I just cannot stand having one around. I hope you have a separate place for him or else his smell will taint the whole barn. Ugh! I don't want one around because his smell with taint the milk. However, I really do wish we had a buck in another field, though he wouldn't be much good after the first use, as I wouldn't want to breed him with a daughter the following year.

We've already taken that smell and the taint under consideration. We're building a separate area for him. We really did plan on borrowing one, but not many people around here have goats. We really didn't go out to buy one, but to borrow one, but he was thinning his herd and wouldn't let us just use him. The only other people who we have seen with goats small enough for our girls lives quite a ways off. Then we also considered what would happen if things got really bad in the world and we weren't able to have modern conveniences. So, we decided that it may not be a bad idea to own our own.

Oh, there's nothing wrong with having a buck- they stink, but they are necessary. Many people don't realize how bad it can be until they get one though. Try to keep him as far away from your girls and home as possible Razz

He would probably be happier if you found him a wether to bunk with- goats are very social critters and they get lonely if kept alone.

Right now he's only 4 months old, so we plan on letting him be with the ladies till he starts hitting his season. He'll be pastured about an acre's length away from the girls and from the house. Think that would be far enough. Also, any suggestions on integrating them? The girls didn't seem too happy he was there.

Just so you know, a buck can impregnate a doe at 8 WEEKS. Having a doe with a buck of any age is a risk. And I'd agree with getting a wether to be with him. Goats are herd animals and alone he is more likely to escape from fencing.

Well, I wouldn't mind him impregnating our doe. I'll have to look into getting him a wether though so he won't get lonely when he's moved to the bacherlor's quarters. How can I tell if they have bred? How long from breeding till birth? This is going to be a first for us, so I'm counting on you guys to walk me through everything. Smile

150 days. When the "girls" start flagging then you'll know they are in heat. (By flagging I mean lifting their little tails and waving them and bellowing all the time.) Usually does go into heat in the fall, but from time to time you can "force" them into heat with a buck around. For us, we leave a buck with the girls for one month and they are usually bred. If the buck starts doing the nasty stuff and trying to mount the girls (and succeeding), then it's likely they are bred. I usually mark the calendar with the 150th day from day one and know they will be coming soon after that. There are ways to know when delivery is near. A good website for goat info is www.fiascofarm.com.
