Ky Squirrel season Empty Ky Squirrel season

Post by 12acrehome on Mon Sep 15, 2014 9:32 am

The early part of squirrel season opened a couple weeks ago. It's been entirely too hot to consider hunting, until this weekend. I wasn't so much out to harvest any game (yet) as I was to get an idea of how many squirrels were using the woods, and what they were eating first. Currently they are working on the white oak acorns. Bow season for whitetail deer is also open now (yup, sounds like fall) and the deer also seem to be going for the white oak acorns.

LOL, there seem to be cameras everywhere these days

If I ate acorns regularly, I'd be going for the white acorns as well since they're not as high in tannins!

I always wondered what made squirrel and deer favor the nuts from one tree over another

Squirrel season is also on here in OH. I haven't had the time to get out yet and also like Keith I'm wanting cooler weather which is here now. Hope to have some good squirrel stew this year.

even if no shots are fired, it is relaxing to just stroll through the woods

I haven't hunted in years, and I never got anything when I did go. But, it got me out of the house and I enjoyed walking thru the woods.

I love to munch on a nice fat squirrel and so does hubby, but I am a trapper.  I am not much use with a gun at all.

Trapping is more effective, but the gun is more selective Wink

Oddly enough I kept catching birds in the rat traps for some reason.  I do better with a squirrel sized box trap.

I have always been afraid of shooting a rifle up into a tree, if I was to miss it is untelling where it would come down at. I know the risk is very low, but I just can't get my mind past it. I do have a pellet rifle, but I need to get better at shooting it before I try to take game with it.

I limit my rifle shots (non pellet rifle) to when they are on the ground, or very near the ground. The .22 cal pellet rifle, on the other hand, opens up a lot of shooting opportunities.

Ky Squirrel season Empty Re: Ky Squirrel season

Post by 12acrehome on Wed Nov 12, 2014 8:48 am

The opening weekend of modern gun season for deer means an interruption in small game hunting season. During the opening weekend, no other hunting is allowed (for obvious safety reasons).

So I go deer hunting during the opening weekend. I saw exactly zero deer. Instead all of those elusive squirrels that have so far stayed just out of range all gathered within 15 feet of my deer blind. They would take turns barking, looking into the blind and barking then running off, or staring intently into the blind (at me) while enjoying an acorn or Hickory nut about ten feet away. After two days of this going on, Monday I decided I was going to take my .22 revolver along on a deer hunt. (perfectly legal since the season was once again open, and runs congruently with the remaining time of Deer season)

I think they knew something was up, they were not so brave, only getting within 30 feet or so. No barking, no posing, much more normal squirrel behavior. Just as well, made it more of a challenge...

After cleaning and an over night soak in salt water they went into a stock pot for 4 hours...once the bones were pulled out veggies were added along with some bullion cubes and a bit of corn starch when it was ready to be thickened. Fresh baked cornbread and iced tea made a fine supper as the first blast of arctic air rushes into the area.

Thanks for the kind words, the gun in question is the first one I bought for my self, and the first one I ever repaired.

Good luck with your hunting, those pesky squirrels can be so annoying when they taunt you. Smile

My neighbor hunts deer and we usually have deer roaming in the field behind our houses. About 2 years ago you didn't see any once the season opened. The day AFTER the season closed there was a herd of 7 of them prancing around in the field taunting my neighbor. Wink It was like they knew the season ended and it was safe once again to roam freely through the woods and field picking up the leftover corn from the farmer.

That pistol was also my first handgun. I bought it back when I was 21. The guy that I bought it from a guy that had a gun shop in the basement of his house. He must have had several hundred guns for sale there and he was quite busy. I started paying on a Ruger Security Six when I was 19 after I told Jack (the gun shop owner) that I needed a couple of years to pay it off and to be old enough to make it legal. He let me pay whatever I wanted as often as I wanted and when I hit that magical age of 21 I had the .357 paid off. I also had saved enough money to but a .22 pistol. He advised me to pick one up of the guns one week and one up the next so I took the Single Six first because it was cheaper to shoot. That was many years ago. I paid $125.00 for it and it was brand new.

The funny thing is that a couple of years ago I got a call and someone wanted me to make them a holster. They had heard about me from a friend of mine. I got the holster made and since I was going to be near where this person lived I decided to deliver the holster rather than send it through the mail. He gave me his address (I had not been in that area for 25 years) and when I got there it was the same house where this gun shop had been located many years ago. The gun shop owner had passed away a long time ago. The man I made the holster for was his son-in-law.

Didn't mean to hijack your topic Keith. That gun just brought back a lot of memories.
