Is it stealing? Empty Is it stealing?

Post by dizzy Mon Apr 14, 2014 2:49 am

I've been having some problems getting my checkbook to balance. It didn't help that I had ordered new checks, and wasn't sure how much the charge was for those. So I decided I'd stop trying to figure it out until after I got my statement. Normally, I check the balance off the ATM since hubby has a bad habit of forgetting to give me my statements.

I finally got my statement, found out what the charge was, subtracted that, then checked my balance. It was still off. So, I double checked my math and I was still coming up w/a difference of 13 cents. So, since I actually had my last statement, I sat down and starting checking everything. I finally found the problem. I had one charge that I forgot to enter into my checking book. I had another one that I did enter that was never taken out. And they were for almost the same amount, just 13 cents difference.

I no longer have the receipt for the one that was not taken out. So, if I don't go back to the store and tell them that the charge wasn't taken out of my account, am I stealing? Or, since it was an error on their part, and not due to anything that I did, is it something that I shouldn't even worry about?

Personally I wouldn't worry about it.  Chances are that it will still be deducted eventually.  I have had some charges take a couple of months to process before.  I would enter in the missing charge and consider the missing charge "gone".  Then I would mark it (red circle) in my checkbook and just keep watching for it to clear.  I am sure sooner or later it will.

13 cents?? I wish we could keep it that accurate. DW dumped a pile of reciepts a very out of date check register, and a bank statement in front of me (a while back) and said here you're. Better at math than I am, balance this for me. Well it was 1,300 dollars off. It took 3 months to straighten that out.

Like FF said, enter it, mark it, and watch for it to clear.

The only reason it was off by 13 cents was because I missed one, and never had the other come in. I'll admit to being a bit OCD when it comes to my balance.

I'm OCD about my checkbook too! My nieces will NEVER get another check for any occasion from me, it took them 4 months of me pestering them to cash their birthday checks.

I'd say just hold that amount out of your balance and let it go a few more months, it may turn up yet.

I keep ours balanced to the penny. Sometimes something like what you described will happen, and I'll let it ride for about 3 months in case it does finally go through. If it doesn't, I'll add it back in if it's a debit. I think checks can go for 6 months or a year before they must be voided.

If you don't have the receipt, I wouldn't worry about it.

As of Saturday, it still wasn't taken out. And I've made other purchases there that have been taken out.

I have had the same thing happen to me and have asked the business that never took it out, about it. They said that there is no way to take it out now so "Have a good day" and that was it. I now usually keep it out in my ledger for about six months and if it isn't taken out by then I add it back in. This has only happened to me a couple of times in the last several years. But that is the way I handle it.

I've been busy with lots of different stuff. I guess that is the way it is sometimes. Glad to know I was missed. I'll try to get on more but we will just have to see.
