Post by 2wFarm on Mon Jan 13, 2014 1:49 am

We raise Alpines. This year the LORD has blessed us with a tripled herd. 15 does were bred so likely I'll have leftover bucklings. I know which ones will be wethered/culled by bloodlines.

My Q: I was told Alpine bucklings do not produce much meat and should be butchered early on. Does anyone have exp. with using alpine breeds for meat? What age should I butcher? How should I raise? Milk/grain fed? And is it cost-effective to take to the processor?

I know nothing about dairy animals but Sonshine raises some and may have an answer for you. You may have to wait a bit for a response as she's under the weather currently.

I can not give you specifics, but I know that some people will actually cull for the table right after birth. You end up with a rabbit sized meat portion, but you also do not have to deal with any feeding or added expenses.

I have a friend that raises Boer goats, but I am not sure if she would have any good advice in the case of Alpines or not.

I had read that alpines would have to be butchered young, like an Easter lamb. B/c they get leggy and bony as height starts. I never though about right at birth....

would like to hear from someone who has actually grown/butchered an Alpine, if possible. or a similar large swiss breed.

Sorry, nothing to add here, we raise Beef Cattle (Angus / White Face cross)

I'd be interested in this information too, just to be "in the know"
