Luffa seed give a way drawing on the 15th
We are getting a lot of seeds from our luffa, so I figured I would do a drawing for them. Anyone who's interested in getting some luffa seeds just post your name and I'll do a drawing on the 15th.

What is a luffa? Is it the thing my wife uses in the shower?

Harvey, yes, it's to use in the shower to exfoliate the skin.

Ok, in that case put me in.Sonshine wrote:Harvey, yes, it's to use in the shower to exfoliate the skin. Â
I never knew that was something you could plant, I alway thought it was something that came out of the ocean, like a spounge.

Harvey, I thought the same thing, until someone on Homesteading Today offered some seeds to anyone who was interested. They are actually in the cucumber family. They grow on a vine and do well growing up on lattice. They have some beautiful, big, yellow blooms. I love them. You get tons of seeds from them, and since we've started harvesting them we have more seeds than we'll ever use or need. I may give some to everyone who signs up rather than doing a drawing, depends on how much response I get.

That is very interesting, sorry to hyjack this thread, but are there any other uses for them other that the shower?

Harvey, I'm not sure of any other uses, but I really enjoy using them to bathe with.
Re: Luffa seed give a way drawing on the 15th
I was watching a cooking show, Chopped, and learned that Luffa, before it is fully matured, is Chinese okra, and is eatable. They said is is a lot like cucumber mixed with zucchini.
I haven't planted mine yet, due to wet weather, but I plan on getting it in the ground in the next couple of days, if it drys out enough. Have any of you planted yours yet? I was thinking of letting it climb my fence.
God bless,
Chad

I planted my Luffa seeds today. I planted some that I plan to train to climb, and some that will just grow on the ground. I will keep you a posted on them as the season wears on.
God bless,

Re: Luffa seed give a way drawing on the 15th
Well I forgot to update this last year, and was just thinking about these again.
I live next to a building owned by the local community collage, and my Luffa plants were planted on the fence between my house and their parking lot. Well, they hired a teenage boy to spray weed killer around the building, and he sprayed my luffas and one of my tomato plants. I am sure it was not on purpose, but it killed them all.
Did anyone else have theirs turn out?

Re: Luffa seed give a way drawing on the 15th
I had a failure to thrive that I am blaming on weather and soil conditions. Being a heavy clay soil that was freshly limed I have to wonder if the lime had time to work.
