Chicken water bucket!

Chicken water bucket!
I saw this on youtube, and plan to build one myself. I can't find the youtube video, so I will do my best to explain it.
Take a 5 gallon bucket, and install a toilet float vavle with a fresh water line suppling it. then install 4-6 chicken water nipples in the bottom. These can be had from amazon.com, and are very cheap.
http://www.amazon.com/Nipple-Drinker-Chicken-Feeder-Poultry/dp/B008AW4F38/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pdT1_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3K1UY3305D11U&coliid=ICBUZEXGNEGTW
Then you put the lid back on the bucket to keep bugs and dirt out, and hing it in your coop/feeding area.
The float valve refills the bucket when the chickens drink. They can NOT walk or poop in the water, and it is alway clean. The manufactur of the chicken nipples says to have 1 nipple for every 3 chickens, so more than 1 bucket may be needed for a large flock.
If I find the YT video I will post it. Either way I will post my own video once I get mine bulit.
I have also seen just 1 nipple installed in the bottom of a 2 liter pop bottle. I think this is what I will use in my brood box so that the chicks are used to the nipples from birth.
God bless,
Chad

Re: Chicken water bucket!
Well I made a crude manual fill version of this. It works great! The only issue I have had is getting the chickens to drink from it. The manufacturer recomends using the nipples from the time they hatch so they are used ti them, but I didn't have the money for them until now so I couldn't. It took a couple of days, and a little trickery, but I got them drinking from it.
First I tried just wiggling the nipple with my finger to show them, but they just wanted to peck my finger. So I crammed a couple of rasberries in the nipples in a way that they would have to work to get them. This did the trick for some of the smarter birds, and then the others learned from watching the one that figured it out.
Rumor at work is we are getting a safety bonus next week, if so I will finally be able to replace my camera. I will post pix if I do.
God bless,
Chad

Re: Chicken water bucket!
cool about the safety bonus!!! Ours usually only run around 100 bucks...
The last one I got was for shutting down an unsafe production center. I cost the company over $300,000.00 in clean up, repairs and down time, but prevented an explosion. For that I got a $25 gift card, and was awarded the first safety coin that plant had ever issued.
Kinda cool, neat little keep sake.

Re: Chicken water bucket!
Here at the coal mine going 3 months without a lost time injury is a really big deal, so we ALL get $1500.00! I have worked here almost 4 years, and this is only the second time we have made it 3 months.
This 3 month span (that we are getting the bonus for) ended June 30th. The day before yesterday a guy had a sliver a steel go into his eye, and we found out today the he will have to have his eye removed. Please keep him in your prayors, he has 3 small children.

Re: Chicken water bucket!
Oh wow, I will pray for him...
3 months??? My department has not had a lost work day injury in over 2,000 days, and not even an OSHA recordable injury in three years. On the other hand when we have an injury it is usually fatal.

Re: Chicken water bucket!
Underground Coal mining is dangerous, but this is company wide spanning 5 mines and a large surface workforce.
I have worked in factories, forges, cunstruction, and a few other industries, but there is nothing that even comes close to working underground. There is danger everywhere. All that being said my company is one of the top as far as safety.

Here is a link to the MSHA (minings version of OSHA) site with some coal fatality stats for the past few years. This my help you understand why My company would give everyone @1500.00 for 3 months without an lost time.

Re: Chicken water bucket!
My dad has worked here for 20 years, and I have worked here almost 4 years. I thank God that we both have jobs that are mostly office work. Dad works in the parts department, and I monitor the workers undergorund electronicly.
Re: Chicken water bucket!
Oh I'm aware of MSHA, and underground and strip mining. Dad retired from the local Catapiller dealer after 30 years. I could likely tell you stories that would make your hair stand on end. Especially when we get to blasting the long wall...
I'm just amazed they are still paying quarterly bonuses that big. Locally, Peabody and Greene Coal quit paying quarterly and went to yearly.
