2012 Hunting Season Empty 2012 Hunting Season

Post by 12acrehome on Sun Oct 21, 2012 6:53 am

A sizable part of our 12 acre farmette / mini farm / private hunting preserve / over sized garden and yard / whatever other title fits is set aside for wildlife management and woodland preservation. So being a guy with huntable ground guess what I did today. Yup went hunting. It is early muzzle loading season for deer here, and also squirrels are in season. We have two resident does on our place. "Mother and daughter" so to speak. They are safe, we enjoy watching them come and go from our field. So I gathered up the pellet rifle and went squirrel hunting. I stalked five into range, but was only able to get shots at two. I'm thinking fried squirrel biscuits and gravy and grits for breakfast. Wink

As the season progresses I'll post hunting efforts and thoughts here, as well as harvests and I invite everyone who has the opportunity to hunt (or fish, cause crappie and sauger are best caught in cool weather / water) to post your thoughts as well.

2012 Hunting Season Empty Re: 2012 Hunting Season

I'm bugging hubby to take me hunting. He hasn't gone for years, but our DS is talking about starting and I want to go too.

If it wasn't out of season and in my yard, I could have had a turkey the other day. It got in the garden-and couldn't figure out how to get out!

I just have to ask, what kind of hunting are you wanting to do? Small game or Large? Firearms or Archery? if Firearms, modern or traditional?

Also do you want to stalk your quarry or ambush it?

2012 Hunting Season Empty Re: 2012 Hunting Season

Small game and deer. It's illegal to hunt in Jersey w/a rifle-except black powder during certain times and all I have is a 20 gauge. So, I'd start w/that and go from there. Eventually, I would like to add archery, but I'd need to take the test for that.

As to what I want to do, I want to learn what I can.

I took the firearms test years ago. Hubby always said we were going to go hunting-and we went deer hunting a couple of times. He got a deer one year, but that's it. So, he used to send me out by myself. And I'd see the deer-but they'd be too far away for a shot. Neutral Then, the kids came along and I had to stop going.

I wish my dh hunted. We love venison! Don't think I could have the heart to do it myself, though. In times past, we've had friends who hunted who would have too much in their freezer, so they'd give us the deer and we'd have it processed. Or, someone would share some venison in exchange for my homemade bread. That worked out really well and I hope we can do it again.

bartering for meat (venison) is the easiest way to enjoy it, mountainmama. Also you don't have to worry about getting tags, licenses, permission to hunt, etc.

A 20 gauge, or any shotgun for that matter, is the most versatile hunting tool you can have. I prefer to not use stands or blinds when deer hunting. I can do this because I only hunt private property. I like to walk through an area, slowly, quietly stopping for 5 to 10 minutes every 10 to 15 yards. In this way if I see a deer just out of range, I can usually stalk into range. I practice this on squirrels in the early part of the season. The last buck I harvested took 5 hours to get into range of my handgun (.44 magnum) and when I had a clear shot we were 10 feet apart.

I much prefer the hunt to the kill, but do enjoy the wild meats.

Post by dizzy on Mon Oct 22, 2012 7:56 am

There's another way you can get the meat, but it's a bit hard of your vehicle and the deer. Road kill.

The problem w/Jersey is finding places you can hunt. We have several large tracts of public hunting grounds, but they're over hunted. Everyone that doesn't have someplace else to go will go there to hunt. And, it's hard to get permission to hunt on private property-unless it's someone you know and they don't get upset w/the idea that you're shooting Bambi.

I wish, Dizzy! But it still won't work! Dh hit a deer a couple of years ago while driving to work on the interstate at 70 MPH. As soon as I knew he was ok, I checked the deer to see if we could keep it. No luck. Too much damage as the deer was small and impact too great.

Some friends of ours did hit one a couple of months ago and barely had a scratch on their van. They got a very nice buck that way and filled most of a big freezer.

WOW Shocked I am sooo spoiled when it comes to hunting, gardening, livestock, and being with nature. I cannot imagine not having at least a few acres available to hunt or roam and commune with God and His creation at will.

Ok hunting public ground, means no permanent stands or blinds, and heavy pressure. Two ways to approach this. One, walk further (into the center of the thickest cover) and arrive earlier than anyone else is willing to, and stay later than anyone else as well. This means walking in with a cart loaded with lunch, rain gear, enough water, and a means of relieving yourself, and a climbing stand. You will also need to know exactly where you are going, and be able to get there in the dark. Often this means walking in with aid of a flashlight. The goal is to be in place and ready 1 hour before sunrise (when most monkeys are making the most noise and disturbance at the edges of the property).
Option number two is to arrive at or about 8:30 or 9 am (at mid-season) and stay near the parking area. When the bulk of people have left, slip in as quietly as possible, and hunt till three or so depending on when, or if the other hunters come back for the evening hunt.

Yes it is dizzy. With a job change a few years ago due to my former employer closing the factory it's been 4 years since I could take an entire week off.

I am looking forward to deer hunting in a little over a week here in OH. I shot in my inline muzzle loader today. Two shots close to the center of target at 100 yards, and I am now ready for the first day.
Tomorrow I'll be helping a friend sight in his shotgun.
I hope we get some deer, as I can almost taste that venison now! Very Happy

Just cleaned the muzzle-loader. It now shines inside and outside better than when I bought it new. Come on deer season! Smile

By the way I have been out a couple of times for squirrels. The first time my hunting pardner shot a grey squirrel. The second time we came home empty, although I did see one it was just too far away. So I have one in the freezer. Hopefully we will get a couple more or some rabbits later on. I make a small game stew that is delicious.

hmm, small game stew that is delicious...

I don't believe it, and won't believe it until I try it please e-mail a sample asap for judging Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Congrats on the first squirrel, more will follow I am certain. I saw 12 today, but of course I only had my deer rifle.
I also saw a couple rabbits, so they are gonna be in trouble later.

As for the deer, well I saw three, but dared not take a shot at any of them. One was 100 feet off the property, and only paused for a few seconds before leaving. The other two were sighted in excess of 250 yards and running full tilt (full tilt boogie for you helicopter types) so no shots fired. Glad to see them though. My brother bagged a very nice, and very large 8 point buck (4x4 for those used to counting tines on each antler separately)
so after supper (that my wife let me cook Wink ) I get to replace a couple light fixtures.
Good day over-all

Post by 12acrehome on Mon Nov 19, 2012 7:58 am

Well today was the last day I could hunt during the modern gun deer season. To date I have counted 49 squirrel, 7 rabbits and 18 quail on the property I hunt. As for the deer, none, nothing zip zero nadda... I saw three does well on to the adjoining property, and running fast, but nothing where I could harvest a deer.

Post by 12acrehome on Mon Dec 03, 2012 6:59 am

The squirrel rabbit and quail season is well underway here, and the rabbits that marauded through my garden have pulled their usual disappearing act, count stands at zero sightings. There have been a few quail seen here and there, but not a large enough covey to allow a hunt. Squirrels well, the greys have gone to ground, and there have been none seen for two weeks, last count had 9 here. Fox Squirrel have been sighted, but in numbers too few to harvest. There are still many weeks left in the season, so we'll see how it turns out.

I am looking for my recipe for squirrel stew. I haven't made it for some time now and have misplaced it but I will find it and post it here.

Here is a recipe for Venison Pepperoni that is very good. I thought you might be interested since you are hoping to bring in some deer.
7 lb ground venison
3 lb hot sausage
1/3 cup cooking oil
2 teaspoon garlic salt
3 teaspoons hickory smoke salt
3 teaspoons black pepper
1 teaspoon onion salt
2 teaspoons liquid smoke
1/2 cup Tender-Quick salt

Mix well; let stand overnight in the refrigerator. Mix again; roll into 1 - 1 1/2 inch rolls. Put on wire racks over cookie sheets so grease will drip out and bake for 4 hours in 200 degree oven.
