No, when we moved to our "wanna-be-mini-farm" we elected to drop the cable, satallite, and land line phone services.

If they come to netflicks, or huluplus, we'll catch them then. Is it good or a hollywood reality fiasco?

From the interview I saw this morning it looks pretty good. It is not just doomsday preppers. The guy mentioned when Katrina caught everyone off guard. It is for any type of disaster. Looks pretty interesting and the guy they interviewed seemed pretty level headed.

We've been watching them and some are a bit off the wall, but others have some pretty good ideas. These people are prepping for different things. Some are prepping for EMPs, others for economic collapse, etc. They show what the preppers are doing and then they have expert come on to rate how well they prepped for the scenario they were prepping for.

How does ROKU work? I know it is off topic, but I was curious if you could get any news programs on it. We were thinking of getting that.

Joe got Roku for me for Christmas. It works off of your internet service. That's what I watch Glen Beck on. There are some free channels and some that you pay a monthly fee. We get GBTV and Net Flix on ours. I know they have some news channels, but I'm not sure if they are paid ones or not.

Ok I caught a piece of a re-run of these preppers (not sure which episode) but I must say I was not impressed. The sheer paranoia and lack of knowledge or skill demonstrated was just mind boggling Shocked

Hollywood version I am sure, but it does not do anyone any good to lull them into thinking that if they have dried food stores, water stores, and a "bug out bag" so they can leave their stores and go foraging they will be all right.

Keith, I agree that some of them lacked knowledge or skill, but having said that, I do believe some of them had some well thought out plans. Like the guy that raised chickens and his garden in an old inground pool. I thought that was pretty ingenius. Like anything in life, there's some things we can learn from them, even the ones who don't seem to be playing with a full deck, like the lady from Houston who left her car, unprotected and believed it would still be there when she got to it, or that she would even be able to get to it.

Doomsday Preppers Empty Re: Doomsday Preppers

Post by 12acrehome on Wed Feb 22, 2012 10:25 am

my favorite example was the ones in CA, growing "nearly 2 acres worth of food on 1/10 of an acre" using intensive methods of gardening. Trouble is they actually they were self sufficient even though they were watering heavily from the garden hose. No privisions for an independent water source, and the so called experts called them disaster ready.

Haven't had a desire to see anymore.

The ones that are growing food on the 1/10 of an acre have been online for awhile now. I believe they were the first ones to call themselves Urban Homesteaders. A couple of years ago they tried to get that name trademarked. They have some good ideas for folks who live in the cities though.

Doomsday Preppers Empty Re: Doomsday Preppers

Post by backtotheland on Sun Mar 11, 2012 3:14 am

I saw one episode of Doomsday Preppers a year ago at a friend's house. I don't have TV anymore so I haven't seen anymore. You could have knocked me over with a feather two weeks ago when my youngest, who has no interest in self-sufficiency at all, told me that her and her fiancee are watching it all the time now.

My friends have Rouku and I'm going to intest in one as soon as I get back on my feet financially again. I really like some of the channels they have.

I just got through reading the book "One Second After". Scared me to death. I know this is going to happen but some of the things they talked about I never thought about - like people robbing nursing homes, hospitals and pharmacies, what will happen to patients in Nursing Homes and hospitals, gangs attacking towns (I've always worried about people wandering around looking for food but always figured they would ask and I would share what I had) and becoming cannabils and a bunch of nuts saying they were getting the word from Satan to do what they do. Now I'm rethinking my how farming plan and thinking maybe setting up a community of like minded people isn't such a bad idea.

Post by Sonshine on Sun Mar 11, 2012 1:14 pm

I agree that a community of like minded people is a good idea. We don't have that exact set up, but we do have some of our closest neighbors who are and have had discussions on protecting what we have and working together. As for being afraid, fear is from Satan. The way I look at it is that the worst anyone can do is kill us, but that only means we get to go home. I believe God is raising up groups of Christians that are preppers to help others in the days ahead. God showed me over 10 yrs ago some things in a vision that led me down the road of prepping and learning some of the lost arts. I still have a lot to learn, but am trusting that when the time comes and I need the knowledge I will have gained what I need. Bottom line is, I will do all I can to prep, not just for my family, but in order to help others, but my faith will always be in God and His ability to protect and guide me, and if my time comes to go home, then I pray that I will leave this world having left others better equipped to stand fast and help those who God sends their way.

Doomsday Preppers Empty Re: Doomsday Preppers

Post by backtotheland on Sun Mar 11, 2012 6:46 pm

Thanks Sonshine, I needed to hear that. Between the book and watching something last evening at worship on 119 Ministries about the end times I'm pretty nervous. I don't think I would feel that way if I wasn't alone but you're right, all they can do is kill me and take what I have for preps. The worship leader's wife keeps telling me we'll be alright but I'm not sure she understands how people are really going to get. We are in the process of looking at a piece of property that has two mobile homes on it already and a water pump in the front yard so I think if it's God's will and we end up there that is the way it is supposed to be. I still worry about my one daughter though. She is alone with her two kids and I wish she would move closer to me but she has become "citified" as they say and I don't think I could get her back out here. I have faith that God will take care of his people and I am doing what you are doing, I'm doing what I can and learning all I can so I can take care of myself and others.

How far away does your daughter live. My parents and my in-laws all live a 6 hour drive from us, in different directions. Joe and I have asked them to make sure they have a full tank of gas at all times, because they can make it here on a tank of gas. I've talked at length with them about why Joe and I are doing what we are and that we are including them in our thoughts on the best way to prep.

Doomsday Preppers Empty Re: Doomsday Preppers

Post by backtotheland on Mon Mar 12, 2012 7:09 pm

She lives about fifteen minutes away but she's one of those people who thinks it won't happen and if it does the government will come and save us. The youngest I don't worry about too much because her fiancee is an avid hunter and fisherman and they both know how to garden and can. She admitted to me one day recently that she remember doing that stuff with me when she younger.

My biggest worry is an EMP. In that case, unless you have a car that was made in the 60's or early 70's, it's not going to start. I never should read books like "One Second After". My mind starts to go nutty and I get way too worried about it all the time.

An EMP is Joe's biggest concern too, and we've been looking for an older model vehicle, as well as how to build a faraday cage to protect our solar system.

That is a wonderful idea about the faraday cage. I have friends who live totally on solar who really don;'t think an EMP would bother their solar but I'm thinking it will. I'm trying to gather all the hand tools and kitchen gadgets I can. I bought a meat grinder and have been putting it through it's paces making the dog food and now I'm making my own ground meat - after learning about the "pink slime" thing I want to know what's in my meat. I spoke to the butcher at Price Chopper this morning and asked him if he knew where the meat came from - sure enough it comes from some confinement lot in New Mexico. Great....... I'm beginning to think a calf or two would be a good thing too. At least I know what it's eating.

Doomsday Preppers Empty Re: Doomsday Preppers

Post by Sonshine on Tue Mar 13, 2012 12:10 am

It's best to get your meat from a local butcher that buys locally. That's not always easy to do though. We've had problems finding one in our area. We got rid of almost all of our electric appliances. Anytime we had any extra money we put it into manual appliances. We have a meat grinder, a food processor, the pump and seal, grain mill, pasta machine, and a solar freezer. We switched our stove from electric to propane, but we also have the wood stove and the fire pit outside. I'm wanting to get some screen to make something to use for dehydrating. My MIL was shocked that my food processor did as well if not better than the electric ones and said she wanted to get one of them, so we bought her one for Christmas last year. We also bought a bunch of solar lights that Amazon had on sale awhile back. I think we got 10 of them. They aren't as bright at electric lights, but they do a pretty good job and hold their charge pretty good. We also have oil lamps and candles. We've been blessed in the fact that our house has sky lights in the kitchen and both bathrooms. We don't have any rooms in our house that needs light in the daytime. One thing we've been trying to figure out is how to heat the chicken house and barn in the winter time without electrcity. I don't want a wood stove for fear of a fire, so that's something we're working on a solution for. If we don't have heat in the winter for them their water freezes, so we need something that will give enough heat to keep the temps above freezing.

Sonshine, I use an electric dog dish for my chicken's water dish during the winter. It is thermostatically controlled to turn on when it gets colder than 35*F and turns off if it is warmer than that. You can find them in pet or feed stores.

Patrice, I knew there were heaters you could get for water troughs, but didn't know about heated dog dishes. I'll have to see what we can find. Thanks for the info.

So far my manual appliances include an apple peeler, food processor, meat grinder and coffee grinder. I still have to get the grain grinder. What kind of grinder do you have Sonshine.

I'm not going to have electric in my barn at all so I guess I will just have to keep checking their water in the winter. My water source for the animals will be right in the garage so it never freezes, well, it does when the spring freezes which it has done twice this year but it was 15 below zero one morning and we didn't have snow so I think that is why it froze.

I have solar lights along my walkway into the house and while they are not very bright they make it so I can at least see the walkway.

One thing I am going to as far as the animals go is I'm going to get NiteGuard solar lights and put them on all four corners of the fencing and a couple on the chicken coop. I hadn't heard any coyetes in a while and I know there was someone trapping them last fall and they got 60 supposedly from behind my house down probably 10 miles to another farm. Well, this morning at 3:30 there was one out back again. Looks like the dogs don't go outside after dark now unless they are on a leash.
