Feeding NIGHTMARE!!! Empty Feeding NIGHTMARE!!!

Post by beccachow on Sun May 10, 2009 3:31 am

I know I discussed this on another forum, but I have serious issues right now.

I have to feed my old man some soaked high fat grain and some beet pulp at least once per day. BUT I HATE GOING OUT THERE. Buddy will calmly go to his bucket, thank goodness he is Herd Leader and knows no one will challenge him for his tasty treat. But...

Sid will go to HIS bucket and cstand, unless he needs to chase Sunny...meantime Sunny will almost knock ME over to get away from Sid, and when I have his grain he will run me down. I cannot get Sunny to go to his bucket and wait. Oh, I got super duper low fat grain for those guys, they get a handful to shut them up while Buddy eats. I noticed that Sid and Sunny were both wild eyed CRAZY on just a handful of the high fat stuff. Anywhooo...Sunny just gets so crazy he actually scares me. I have tried backing, making him stand, yielding...but all his lessons go out the window when there is food involved. I know it is A)lack of respect and B)fear that, as bottom horse, his food will be taken by Sid or Buddy. I have tried going out there and twirling a lead rope, he lets it hit him Mad . Poor Buddy is suffering as I just cannot deal with these antics, I dread feeding time. How do I get Sunny to calm down and realize that his place at feeding time is by HIS bucket, not in my pocket?

When mine start acting like idiots when feeding I take the lunge whip out with me a few times and that seems to remind them that they need to back off, listen and do what I want. Swinging a lead rope wouldn't faze them. Suspect

I will have a few hours this afternoon to go out there and remind Sunny that he is NOT the boss of me. Really, I mean it Rolling Eyes ! Between this and the rocket ride the other day, he has challenged me for the LAST TIME. Really, I mean it...

Nope. Went for a hike with Kara, this and that...he got off easy this time (sigh). I did give him a stern lecture.

Becky....stern lecture LOL
ditto the lunge whip. At feedtime a few years ago I had a yearling come at me with both back legs flying. I threw everything I had at him and he wouldn't back off. Finally threw the grain at him..and he still came at me. I managed to dive under the fence. Came back out wiht a pail of feed, a lead rope and lunge whip./ He turned to do the same thing but this time was met wiht a crack across is butt as hard as I could do it. WAlked up to him and lead him while holding the grain before I let him have it. He was just testing.
Kinda sounds like a dangerous situation at feeding time. Can you tie them in separate areas to let them eaT> Tie them before you bring out the grain. Is what I do with my goats to avoid being trodden.

I will be taking a lunge whip in there with me for sure. it is dangerous to the point that I cannot go in there with my daughter for fear she will get terampled, and I do NOT want her to grow up with ANY fear of horses at all! I'll let you guys know how the next "discussions" go. I truly think once Sunny realizes that his bucket is in such and such a place, he will do what the others do and just go there and wait. He is pretty new to the feeding routine at the beccachow ranch and very unsure of his place, and mostly afraid he will miss out on something. But I cannot and WILL not have this behavior!
