Post by amybyrd21 Sat Jun 13, 2009 1:17 am

Rebekka Wesley and I picked 6 of our cabbages today. I already had two from the store in the fridge beause I did not think ours would be ready yet. Now how do I use them all up. I still have 30 something in the garden here and some at my MIL's. I replanted after the goats and chickens mowed them down and they all came back out after the fact. Making kimchi but that doesn take that many and kraut. I do not think that takes that much either. They are huge compared to the store bought ones too. HELP!!!! Can you can or freeze them.

The only way I know to preserve them are the two ways you mentioned. You should be able to dehydrate them. I never have any luck with cabbage. Sad I've planted it two years in a row now, and nothing. I was really hoping to make some kraut this year.

My pic doesnt show up. They are king cabbages I think. I bought the plants at a local fruit market. They are bigger than my head. I have not had any luck until this year. I got rid of my goats, locked up the chickens and used DE and 7 dust. Now I am over run by them but hubby was the one that planted them and he has a green thumb. I gave three to a neighbor with 6 children. So may be that will help feed them if they all eat it. I still have 5 left from today. Cabbage for dinner tonight.

i just found out you can use a 5 gallon bucket to make kraut or kimchi in and use a big trash bag filled with water to top it off. You can dehydrate them and make them into a powder to flavor thigns. The old timers use to bury them up side down in the dirt. The outer eaves wouel not be usable but you still got a lot of the cabbage. I am trying to find recipes to use dehydrated cabbage.

Having too many cabbages is not a bad thing. Don't forget to give a few away to friends and neighbors....

Now, as for using Sevin™️ within any number of miles of anything you actually plan to eat, well....yikes.

Plant pests are drawn only to those weak plants that are actually broadcasting a distress frequency picked up by the hyper-sensitive insect antennae. The "pests" are actually a significant benefit to the gene pool, by the Creator's design. They only remove the weak.
If you have plant pests, you have, generally, one of two problems. One, you may be dealing with an unnatural hybrid that nature detests for it's unbalanced characteristics......or, two, you have poor soil, and your otherwise nature-approved variety is languishing for nutrient or tilth.
Both maladies can be remedied; the former by the use of age-old, time tested heirloom varieties....the latter by building your soil with all of the rich compost you can manufacture.
I have taken it upon myself as a lifelong (so far, so good) calling to build up the fifteen acres that I farm intensively with 18-24 inches of compost. I'm probably close to halfway there. The areas that we began to garden first are near completion. That said, I have yet to see the maximum for plant health, flavor, texture, keeping quality, pest and disease resistance, drought resistance, and soil drainage/water permeability. Every year just gets better and we raise some fantastic stuff. When I first began to manufacture and apply compost on a grand scale, I never envisioned the extent of positive results that would come from it. As things continue to improve I am constantly aware that I have only lightly scratched the surface of what can be done with soil and flora on this, God's good earth.

Put your energies into soil improvement and leave the insecticides to Monsanto, et al.

It depends on how much kraut you will use. For the 2 of us, I planted 30 cabbages. Some are for eating, and the rest will be for kraut. We can easily eat this once a week.

I have also heard you can shred it and freeze it in sizes that you would use in veggie soup.
