Good Morning,

My wife and I live in Middle Tennessee. We raise black Angus cattle. There aren't any packing plants around here, so the primary market is for calves. Buyers from the large feed lots in the mid-West come out here and buy calves for finishing in their feed lots.

We had a terrible drought and blistering heat last summer that seriously damaged my hay fields and pastures. As a result of that, we sold off many of our yearlings and culled some cows. We are down to 38 head right now including our bull, a couple of springing heifers, some yearlings, and a couple of newborns. We have 25 momma cows. We let the bull run with the herd year-round so we have calves being born virtually every month of the year.

We wean the calves at 6 months and keep them in our "weaning pasture" for one month and then sell them. They average around 500 lbs. and currently we receive about $1.00 per pound for them.

So how is the market in your area?

God bless,

Tom in TN

Thank you Sonshine,

I've been visiting from time to time, however, I have been rather remiss in posting.

I got a little remiss myself, but am hoping that I'll be able to get online more now. Did you notice we have a new member from Missouri?
