Re: Ky Squirrel season
I limit my rifle shots (non pellet rifle) to when they are on the ground, or very near the ground. The .22 cal pellet rifle, on the other hand, opens up a lot of shooting opportunities.
Re: Ky Squirrel season
The opening weekend of modern gun season for deer means an interruption in small game hunting season. During the opening weekend, no other hunting is allowed (for obvious safety reasons).
So I go deer hunting during the opening weekend. I saw exactly zero deer. Instead all of those elusive squirrels that have so far stayed just out of range all gathered within 15 feet of my deer blind. They would take turns barking, looking into the blind and barking then running off, or staring intently into the blind (at me) while enjoying an acorn or Hickory nut about ten feet away. After two days of this going on, Monday I decided I was going to take my .22 revolver along on a deer hunt. (perfectly legal since the season was once again open, and runs congruently with the remaining time of Deer season)
I think they knew something was up, they were not so brave, only getting within 30 feet or so. No barking, no posing, much more normal squirrel behavior. Just as well, made it more of a challenge...
After cleaning and an over night soak in salt water they went into a stock pot for 4 hours...once the bones were pulled out veggies were added along with some bullion cubes and a bit of corn starch when it was ready to be thickened. Fresh baked cornbread and iced tea made a fine supper as the first blast of arctic air rushes into the area.

I'm coming to your house for some of that good squirrel stew!
Glad you were successful. I like that gun too. I have one just like except mine is 6 1/2" barrel.

Squirrel is one of my favorites too (obviously)
Rohn, just call ahead so I can be sure there is some to share
Thanks for the kind words, the gun in question is the first one I bought for my self, and the first one I ever repaired.

Re: Ky Squirrel season
Good luck with your hunting, those pesky squirrels can be so annoying when they taunt you.
My neighbor hunts deer and we usually have deer roaming in the field behind our houses. About 2 years ago you didn't see any once the season opened. The day AFTER the season closed there was a herd of 7 of them prancing around in the field taunting my neighbor. It was like they knew the season ended and it was safe once again to roam freely through the woods and field picking up the leftover corn from the farmer.

I don't think he ever said anything, but all these guys were complaining to hubby that they weren't seeing any deer. He was going to tell them about the buck I saw when I had my lesson last week.

That pistol was also my first handgun. I bought it back when I was 21. The guy that I bought it from a guy that had a gun shop in the basement of his house. He must have had several hundred guns for sale there and he was quite busy. I started paying on a Ruger Security Six when I was 19 after I told Jack (the gun shop owner) that I needed a couple of years to pay it off and to be old enough to make it legal. He let me pay whatever I wanted as often as I wanted and when I hit that magical age of 21 I had the .357 paid off. I also had saved enough money to but a .22 pistol. He advised me to pick one up of the guns one week and one up the next so I took the Single Six first because it was cheaper to shoot. That was many years ago. I paid $125.00 for it and it was brand new.
The funny thing is that a couple of years ago I got a call and someone wanted me to make them a holster. They had heard about me from a friend of mine. I got the holster made and since I was going to be near where this person lived I decided to deliver the holster rather than send it through the mail. He gave me his address (I had not been in that area for 25 years) and when I got there it was the same house where this gun shop had been located many years ago. The gun shop owner had passed away a long time ago. The man I made the holster for was his son-in-law.
Didn't mean to hijack your topic Keith. That gun just brought back a lot of memories.

Re: Ky Squirrel season
Great story Rohn!!
Patrice, I'm convinced that there is some kind of communication network that the game animals check so they know when the seasons open and close. For three weeks every day twice a day I would walk to where I was placing my stand. The birds and squirrels and rabbits started to get used to my daily coming and going. Then I stopped going back there for two weeks. Now the deer aren't there, the squirrels were hyper sensitive, the rabbits are gone...I'm thinking that the rumors of a mountain lion are just over blown bobcat sightings...or that darned communications network LOL

Re: Ky Squirrel season
Once hunting season closes you'll see them all reappear like magic! They'll scamper around taunting you just because they can. LOL

I wonder if they have the new 4G stuff?
Re: Ky Squirrel season
I think they all have the newest phone and text each other about what's going on.

Re: Ky Squirrel season
LOL something is certainly different about how all animals behave during hunting season.
4G technology wouldn't surprise me at all
