How's Your Garden Doing Empty How's Your Garden Doing

Post by PATRICE IN IL Thu Aug 28, 2014 10:34 am

My garden is producing very nicely. Tonight I filled my 16 quart stock pot twice with the green beans from my 2 ten foot rows of pole beans. I brought my pot out to the garden because I knew I wouldn't be able to get all the beans into the tub I usually use to pick beans. Each row filled the pot to over flowing. The last time I picked the beans was before I had my surgery so most of these beans need to be shelled as they are too large for eating as green beans. I gave one pot worth of beans to an elderly friend because we don't care for the shelled beans as much as the tender green beans.

I also harvested 3 large zucchinis and about 15 tomatoes. I have more onions to pull that my ds missed when he pulled them for me several weeks ago. My onions are HUGE(baseball size and larger) this year. I have 2 bread racks full of onions drying in the garage. After they are dry I'll remove the tops and place them in some pantyhose legs twisted to separate them for storage. I've already harvested 3 other large zucchini and at least 25 tomatoes as well from the garden.

My pumpkin vines are going crazy and I know I have a few small pumpkins on them. Smile

So how is your garden found this year?

My garden this year is small and it is made up of a small greens bed in front of my house, white half barrel planters in the back of the house, two stock tanks/raised beds and a row of beans on one fence and a row of tomatoes on the other.

I have harvested at least a couple dozen really nice slicing cucumbers, kale, plenty of green beans, carrots, swiss chard, a few beets, a few patty pan squash (before the bugs got it), sweet and hot peppers and enough tomatoes for us to keep eating them AND have enough to dehydrate.   Really a decent year so far.

Your setup sounds good FF. It's got to be easier to take care of multiple smaller spaces than one large one.

The weeds have taken over while I've been recovering. We've had so much rain that I'm just going to have to take the weed whacker to my paths and pull whatever I can from the raised beds.

My pumpkin vines are taking over the cucumber vines and the back fence. You can't even tell there are asparagus in that bed with all the vines. Wink

My leeks are getting huge and I'll probably pull them next week so I can plant my garlic. I was going to move the garlic to a smaller bed so they could have the bed to themselves but I planted my zucchini in there and there's no room currently to get them in.
