I think I have another broody!!!!!
I've been trying to get broody hens for the past couple of years now w/out much luck. I have the one that went broody last year and raised a batch of chicks. And, she went broody again this year. But, she only goes broody once a year.
Today when I went to check for eggs, my one hen was sitting in the nest box. I didn't try to check under her cuz she'll peck! I figured I could get any eggs under her later. I kept checking on her all day long. She never budged. Finally, I put on a denim jacket and some leather gloves and went and checked under her. Good thing I had them on, she would have torn me up! The only thing under her was 4 fake eggs. So, I got the eggs I got today (all 3 of them), put Xs on them, then removed the fake eggs and stuck those under her. When I left, she was still on them!
I'm hoping she really is broody. I have eggs in the incubator, and I think they'd be close enough in age to any she might hatch out to raise them for me. And, if she is broody, I hope it won't be a one time deal. At least I'd have my one set of chicks out by the time I'd need to put her and chicks in their own area.

Thanks! And this is one that I had already planned on keeping, so now she's really safe!

Re: I think I have another broody!!!!!
I'm hoping I can get at least 3 broodies-just so long that they don't all want to sit on eggs at the same time. I can handle 2 at the same time. Then, I'd let them have up to 3 eggs and I'd put more in the bator. That way, I can have up to 10 chicks at a time. I'm planning on redoing my chicken coop this fall, as well as my broody area. I just don't have a big enough coop. Blame chicken math. And, I may make my pen bigger.

That will be a lot of chicks, are you raising meat or egg birds?

Re: I think I have another broody!!!!!
My birds are dual purpose birds, since I want both meat and eggs and don't have the room to have 2 different pens of chicks.
She's still on the nest. And when I checked under her, there was one new egg as well as 3 fake eggs. I have no clue as to how she got the fake eggs in there. And as for the other, I'm not sure who laid it. It was a small brown egg. She lays small brown eggs. So I don't know if, even though she's broody, she laid an egg, or if one of my young ones has started to lay. I'm going to have to set up the thing to keep everyone else out of there when I'm not at the farm. That means, I'm going to have to move her over to the other side of the coop. I don't think that will be a problem.

Sounds like she might have has some human help moving those fake eggs.
I hope she sets tight for you.

No one has been there. They weren't under her when I went to Bible study, but were when I got back, so I dunno.

I've heard of hens stealing eggs from other nests B4. I don't know how they do it, but they do. So since she wants more eggs, it won't hurt to leave the fake eggs in w/her. Though if she hatches anything from them, I'll be extremely surprised!

I'm going to have to get her closed off for sure. I keep finding her on the wrong nest because someone else wants to lay an egg in her area. I'll get that done tomorrow.
