Need some advice on wood project Empty Need some advice on wood project

Post by PATRICE IN IL Tue Apr 22, 2014 9:21 pm

I have a good sized chunk of the maple tree I had taken down that I'd like to make into cutting boards for myself and for my sisters for Christmas. What do I need to apply to the wood and when? I need to have my neighbor cut the chunk into slabs for me before I can do anything with it. A friend said there is some type of wax product I need to apply now, before the wood drys out, to preserve it. I'd appreciate any help/advice you can give me with this project. TIA

Every wood project needs to start with dried wood. If you try to seal in the moisture of green wood, eventually it would either rot or warp, or crack and split. For what you are wanting to do, let the wood dry. If air dried, you need to allow 1 year for every 1.5 inch thickness. Have it cut into slabs about 1/2 inch thicker than you want to end up with, wax the ends (this will keep it from splitting) (we always just used paraffin) Lastly, be very careful with how you finish the wood. Oil finish seems to work best.
