Tips for posting plants for IDing Empty Tips for posting plants for IDing

Post by dizzy Fri Jul 04, 2014 6:43 am

I've seen pictures posted of a plant someone wants IDed, but it's almost impossible to tell by looking at the picture what they actually have. They'll post just 1 picture that doesn't really have the details needed for IDing, which can make it next to impossible to ID. So, I figured I' post some tips.

1. When posting a picture of a flower, make sure the flower is the main thing you focus on. You should be able to see the shape of the flower, how many petals it has, and how they're arranged. Also, where on the plant is the flower, and is the flower a single, or in some type of multi flower arrangement?

2. For all plants, another thing to consider is the leaves. What shape are they? Do the edges have teeth, are they lobed, do they have hair, and if so, how fuzzy is it? How are the leaves arranged? Are they opposite of each other? Do they alternate on the stem, or are there 3 or more in a whorl? If it's just a flower, are the leaves all the way up the stem, or are they located just at ground level?

3. Where did you find the plant? Was it a wet area, or dry? Was it in the woods, or a meadow? What part of the country did you find it? If you don't want to post an exact location, just a general idea is fine.

4. How big is the plant? Is it a tree, shrub, vine, or regular flower? Is it wild, or ornamental?

5. If there's any type of nut or fruit on it, try to get a good pic of that as well.

This is all I can think of, if anyone can think of anything else to add, feel free to do so. And, if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

Leaf shape size and arrangement are also helpful. A picture of the bark of a tree or bush can also be an identifier.

Also in addition to the closeups a full plant pic would make things better.  Sometimes I lose scope with a close up.
