I've got my fingers crossed for you, I hope it works this time.

thanks Patrice...time will tell, other repairs lasted anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months

Have you tried making a gasket from a cereal box? We've had luck with that when other gaskets failed. We used a gasket sealant along with it.

no, not a cardboard gasket...what I tried seems to be working, but so did all prior attempts at first.
Actually I have an e-mail request in to Briggs and Stratton asking for a cross reference to replace this Kohler engine with...I may also consider a Tecumseh motor, but this is definitely the last Kohler I will own.

The combination of the cardboard and gasket sealant works pretty good. The cardboard absorbs the oil, swells and seals against the imperfections in the metal. It might be worth a try if you have a problem in the future.

I actually thought about that harvey, but it's an aluminum head and a steel cover.
Besides that there are regular valve adjustments that are supposed to be done...
and if I decide to destroy this thing I want those covers off so the flame can reach the fuel inside the block
