In promotion of Dwarf fruit trees

In promotion of Dwarf fruit trees
Yes we do have exactly 12 acres on loan from God to do with as we please. With all this space I could easily place full sized fruit trees if I desire, but I don't. I prefer the ease of maintaining dwarf fruit trees. These shorter statured trees mature and bear fruit sooner than their larger cousins.
For more information on dwarf fruit trees look here;

"Dwarf fruit trees are a delightful addition to your edible landscape, whether you have a small space or room for a home orchard. If you can garden, you can grow fruit trees — and, with dwarf fruit trees, fresh homegrown fruit is right at your fingertips!"
For that matter dig around that site for good info on all trees, berries, and fruits.

I agree. I would never plant anything else. You can maintain the trees so much better being a dwarf size. Also if you need more fruit, then plant more trees! You can have more variety that way.
However I never would need more fruit. A healthy mature dwarf will produce about 30 pounds of fruit in an average season. Plenty for a family.

Re: In promotion of Dwarf fruit trees
In my particular situation I choose semi-dwarf because they can tolerate the high winds that cut across the 2 open fields behind my property. I have a dwarf Braeburn apple and it just can't handle the winds even with adequate staking. Heck the silver maple that was here when we bought the place is growing crooked to adjust for the wind. I decided to just prune the semi-dwarf trees to a more manageable height.
We never used to have problems with the wind until they clear cut the fields behind me to build on. Then the economy tanked and the land sits fallow except for the farm field which gets heavily sprayed and planted with either corn or soy beans. The other thing I contribute to the heavier wind is the interstate they built nearby, it is heavily traveled and creates noise pollution and wind sheer.

For me, I'll be going w/the fruit trees that have multiple types of fruit on them. I just don't have the room for several trees. I have them picked out, I just need to order them.

I was considering adding one of those instead of another peach. Hmmmmmm, something to really think about.

Re: In promotion of Dwarf fruit trees
creative grafting has made many types of "fruit salad" trees available, but I rarely see these at the more reputable nurseries. Stark Bros does offer a few, and I strongly recommend sticking with someone with their reputation...

I had one for years. I LOVED that tree and I got it from a cheapo brokerage - Michigan Bulb Co. I think I paid $12 and the first one immediately died, but they sent a replacement and I had it for many years. I just lost it last year after a long battle with a peach virus.
My "Fruit Cocktail" tree had purple plums, nectarines, peaches, and lots of apricots. It produced many many pounds of fruit. Of course being bought on the cheap I have no idea which varieties I had. I highly recommend the multi-grafted varieties.
This was a pic when it was about 3 years old in 2004.
This is a pic of the unusual bloom. Leaves on the different branches were different shapes as well. This was about 2 years ago in 2012.

I was considering one of those but decided to go with a Harglow apricot, a Santa Rosa plum and a Twenty Ounce apple to pair with my Royal Empire and my sickly Braeburn.
