Stock Show

Post by Guest on Sat Mar 01, 2014 12:08 pm

Today I had the privilege of attending my niece and nephew's pig show. They finished with several breed champions and the grand gilt and reserve grand barrow. It was fun to watch and I was amazed at the different types of hogs now in the show arena.

The only showing I've seen of hogs is at the local 4-H fair. They had them right next to the horses, and some of those horses were freaking out!

the hog showings I've been to were little more than auctions

That is funny Dizzy and I can imagine. Our family has always done a lot of stock showing of cattle, hogs, and sheep. For us it was always good family time. We used to go to Okla. youth expo, Denver National, KC Royal, and all of the local, county and state shows. We let our kids show as much as they wanted but the deal was they had to take care of their own stock. They fed, watered, walked, and halter trained every animal they had themselves. We were always there but they had to take the responsibility.

These were my bros. kids. He, I and my sister all did the same as kids. He now is a national level judge and also travels around judging. I know some folks don't care for this at all but we all love it. The kids not only learned a lot of responsibility but also made lifelong friends everywhere we went.

Sounds like a lot of fun and hard work.
