Remaking a table Empty Remaking a table

Post by dizzy Fri Feb 28, 2014 8:46 am

I have a solid wood 30"x48" table. Right now, I'm not using it for anything. It's a bit bigger than I need. But at the same time, I don't want to get rid of it and find something smaller. After all, I already own this. But I came up w/an idea. Rather than leaving it the size it is, I got to wondering how hard it would be to cut it down to a 30"x30" table w/2 9" leaves. The 30" size would be perfect for most things. And then if I need it bigger for any reason, I have the leaves for it. Has anyone ever done anything like this, or heard of any one doing it?

other than needing the sliding mechanism, and some kind of dowel pins with aligning holes, it should be fairly easy to do.

Have I actually done it? No, but I have rebuilt a few with Dad.

Where would I be able to find the sliding mechanism? I thought about Home Depot, or Lowes, but wasn't sure exactly what it was called so I could even look.

Remaking a table Empty Re: Remaking a table

Thanks, FF. Of course, it's not going to happen tomorrow. The table is sitting in my horse trailer cuz I don't have any room for it in my house. I'm just starting to get ideas.

Remaking a table Empty Re: Remaking a table

Post by dizzy Sat Mar 22, 2014 6:53 pm

Why do I feel like I get more support from you guys than from hubby? I told him what I want to do, and he thinks I'm nuts. But, I've been cleaning in the basement and in just a couple of weeks tops, I should have the room I need down there. So, I'm hoping to get this going soon.

So since I might not get help from hubby, I have some questions:

1. Should I take the table apart for cutting, or should I just mark on it where I want to make my cuts and cut thru everything?

2. How big of a slider do I need to buy?

3. What's the best type of saw to use for cutting, a table saw, or a circular saw?

Once it's done, I plan on stripping it down and refinishing it. And, I found a couple of chairs I forgot I had that will match. I'll be stripping them down as well. They have a cushioned seat. I'm thinking of replacing the material on the cushions. I looked at them yesterday, and it doesn't look like it would be that hard to do. It looks like it's just a matter of unscrewing a few screws and pulling out a bunch of staples, taking off the old material and putting on new.

This table will then be used for crafts and (when I learn how to sew) cutting out patterns. For crafts, I can use the smaller size. For cutting out patterns, I can add a leaf or two.

I don't know if I am right how I do things, but I would take off the legs.  Brace up the table top solid and level and cut it with a circular saw and a 2x4 jig.

Making Straight Cuts with circular saw

BTW ... Let's just say we ARE both crazy.  What is the worst that can go wrong?  Maybe you mess up an old table.  OR you can learn something new, have fun, and end up with something that you need and love.

Long live the "crazy" people.

make that three crazy people...FF is spot on with using a 2x4 for a cutting guide, just remember the circular saws blade is off set. The flat base that rides on the piece being cut will position the blade in a different spot depending on which side you put the cutting guide on.

see how the blade is set to one side

Measure (two or three times) and mark where you want to cut, set the saw blade on the mark, off the edge of the table, and slide the guide board into position... well you get the idea

Also cut from the "pretty" side.  The under cut will usually be more splintery.

I'm always very careful when I cut w/a circular saw. I normally line the blade up w/where I want to cut. The problem is always keeping it straight. I'm wondering how it would work if I were to take a 2x4 and clamp it to the table instead of on the saw itself.

That is the jig I use.  Like shown on the video link.  I get no where with one clamped on my saw.  Also the cuts to separate the table you will need to be in the center of the table, not close to the edge at all.  A saw clamped jig won't work.

I'm in the "go ahead and give it a try" group as well. Wink What's the worse you can do, wind up with firewood?

B4 I attempt to cut it, I'll practice some on some wood that I don't care about.
