I hope I have made it clear enough that I do not buy into the prepping fad* but I do believe in being prepared for emergencies. I believe in growing your own food, and being able to survive natural disasters, with minimal impact to your daily routine. How do you know what to be ready for? Well this might help some...

Prepare for emergencies Empty Re: Prepare for emergencies

Severe storms, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, and earthquakes seem to top most of the lists, but all include economic downturn and pandemic...So IMHO everyone should prepare to thrive (not just survive) in local weather conditions, and survive the extremes. I also think everyone should be prepared for economic downturns from time to time, things happen. The pandemic? a world wide epidemic? Well for one eat healthy, and have a ready supply of fruits and vegetables. These will bolster your immune system and help to ward off most illnesses.

Here is a check list you can look at to see if you are ready for local problems that might never arise, but then again they just may...

This is the time of the year to take inventory of your supplies, then add what is needed to keep your family fed and safe through the upcoming winter months. Also think about preparing your vehicle for the winter driving conditions. I add a box to my vehicle with a few warm blankets and some shelf stable snacks in case we get stuck some place.

I think it is important to be familiar with your own area. Around here ice storms are what reek the most havoc. We were without electricity for 10 days once. We had preps in place and did very nicely thank you. Our neighbors had to leave there homes.

In the case of a pandemic, eating healthy is good, but it's also important to have enough food and water on hand and a way to prepare it so you can bunker down until it's over. You sure don't want to go out in the public and be exposed to it.

Sir Issac Newton and family did just that. They holed up in their estate while the "Black Death" of the bubonic plague racked Europe.

He was bored, so he passed the time doing science experiments. Very Happy

Excellent point, I believe the homesteaders would have an advantage if the need to hole up at home arose.
