Shaving experiment Empty Shaving experiment

Post by 12acrehome Sun Sep 08, 2013 1:21 pm

DW has complained about the price of my razor blades for a few years now, but I have yet to find anything as comfortable. My usual blades have been used by me since about 1984. (Gillette Atra Plus) (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=27390&catid=288411&aid=338666&aparam=goobase_filler&device=c&network=g&matchtype=) The best local price we have found is 16.xx for 10. That's not too out of line with other modern razor refills, but in an effort to reduce all costs I'm going to be trying the old style "safety razor"

The price for the razor was $2.24 (no that's not a typo two dollars and twenty four cents) and the blades can be had for around 6 bucks for 50. With shipping from Amazon it will cost less than 9 dollars to try. The razor ships from Hong Kong so it will be mid October before it will arrive. I will post updates on this when everything arrives.

I have had the new old style razor for a couple of weeks now and honestly I do not see why people wanted the more modern designs. This new one actually shaves closer than any multi-blade I've tried, and so far I haven't nicked myself shaving with this one. I guess someone just figured out how to "improve" shaving and ginned up enough marketing hype to sell a more expensive razor.

I will admit that if I skip the after shave lotion there is more irritation, but that is the only thing I see to complain about. A years worth of the Gillette Atra plus razor blades runs about $60.00. A years worth of these other blades costs about $6.00. Well worth it to me.

Pretty neat thread 12acres.  I liked the website you posted here.

If you want to save more $$ you could start using one of these old shaving tools.

Or go a bit more modern and get yourself a pocket knife like this.

Just a thought. Wink

LOL no thanks, the ability to hold those at the proper angle is a learned skill, the safety razor at least is held similarly to the modern designs.
