Mini Greenhouse! Empty Mini Greenhouse!

Post by JH504 Mon Sep 30, 2013 12:20 pm

Hey folks, so I'm trying something very new. First off I'm growing lettuce, never done that. But also I planted it in small pots this past week so I can protect them on cold nights. I am building a raised bed with a mini greenhouse. I have a lot if old double pane windows and I am going to use them as the walls. I'm hoping I can keep fresh lettuce for a while into winter with this setup. All suggestions are appreciated!

Instead of a mini green house you should do a hot bed.

Dig out that frame and fill it with some fresh manure (look up riding lessons in the phone book and just ask) then a few inches of soil on top. As the manure pile composts it will provide your lettuce with bottom heat.

I agree, a hot house would be the ticket if you're in a cold climate...However if you're not in a cold climate, and only growing lettuce consider a cold frame, or a pit type green house...

a hot frame relies on a heat source, like an electric light bulb, a hot mat, or the decomposition of fresh manure to create heat...lettuce does not need to be heated beyond 70 degrees F or you risk having it bolt...even a cold frame that does not have vents can heat up to over 100 degrees...monitor temps carefully

Thanks folks, I'm in NC so expect 15-20 degree lows and some snow in winter, but not sustained. I have enough windows to enclose my 30"x84" bed and go 48" high. In those temps could i keep it warm with just the manure, or would lights need to be added? It is also very close to the dryer vent and I thought of directing some of that warm air, but it would only be laundry days.

yes for year round production you will need an alternate heat source.
