First harvest of the year Empty First harvest of the year

Post by Sonshine Tue May 21, 2013 11:57 am

Today we harvested some of our English peas, about 2 pints. I know, not much, but the vines are loaded so we're expecting a good harvest from them. We also got some lettuce and spinach today. We have some cabbages about the size of softballs. Tomorrow I'll be picking some blackberries and mulberries, trying to get them before the birds do.

We've been in the mid to upper 80's here in the daytime and the mid to upper 60's at night. We've also had a lot of rain this year, so we're now officially out of drought. It's really done wonders for our garden.

My dad had his first pea Sunday. He gave it to my oldest daughter. She is like me, the only way we like peas is raw off the vine. Very Happy

I finally tilled my garden yesterday afternoon & then the storms hit last night. We are leaving Saturday for Virginia so I thought it would be good to get it tilled so it could dry and I can rake it when I get home. I want to do peas, but will have to wait until Fall now. But when I've tried them in the past I didn't yield enough to make it worth the effort. Can you suggest good ways for big yields on them? I don't know exactly how big my garden area is but it's pretty decent size for being in town.

I think the first harvest of the season tastes the best. You have that anticipation of what it's going to taste like, then you take that first bite and yummo!!!

Congrats on your first pickings Sonshine!

Kerrig,
This is the first time I've had success with English peas. I've always planted them too late in the season and the heat down here would kill them. This time I got them in early and they are loaded. I've read that you need to plant them as soon as the ground is workable. Down here it's workable year round though. Smile In your area I would go with as soon as the ground is thawed enough to work.

I don't eat enogh of them to make it worth planting them, but Dad always plants his on Valintines Day. Even if there is snow on the ground, but he grows snow peas, so English peas may be differant.

Our tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrot that survived the frost are doing well. Our friend that we shared seeds with said her garden is doing great. She even started a second garden for her son.
I think my daughter has lost interest, so once the harvest from this year is in I am going to try to do it all at my apt. next year.
Already trying to budget in 1or 2 green houses. I will not give up on this! I am still collecting 4 & 5 gallon buckets so by next year I should have a good supply.
I think we are going to have plenty of tomatoes and maybe cucumbers this year, but that's about it. Next year will be better, that is if the Lord doesn't come before than and if he does I won't have to worry about it.
