My rabbits
I New Zealand White meat rabbits. I currently have 2 does and 2 bucks. Both does are pregnant. One is due to kindle any day now, the other will kindle in two weeks. I have 5 cages, 1 I found and referbished, 2 were given to my by the pastor of my church (my cousin), 1 was given to me by my dad, and I built one.
I enjoy building my own. They can be built cheaper and better than the prefab ones, and to any size you want. I use J-clips and 1"x1/2" wire. I feed pellets, and some alfalfa hay. I know most people feed timothy hay, but my friend that has been helping me learn about rabbits says alfalfa grows them off better and faster, so I have been taking his advice so far. I also feed garden scraps in the warmer months as a treat, and to lower the cost.
I love rabbits, they are a great testoment to Gods wonder. He created the perfect food critter, and it supplies the best fertelizer there is. How could that be by chance? God is good at what he does, and I thank him every day for that!
God bless,
Chad
P.S. I will update this thread with pix when my does kindle.

Re: My rabbits
We also have rabbits. They belong to my daughter and are not for meat. I have considered raising some meat rabbits and may do so in the future. I'd love to see pictures of your rabbits and hutches.

Re: My rabbits
I will post pix when I can, I haven't been a member of the forum long enough yet. I do have pix on my blog, if you want to pm my I will give you the address.
Re: My rabbits
You are free to post the link to your blog here if you'd like. You should be able to post pics here too. I didn't think there was a time limit on it. We had thought of raising meat rabbits, but DS would have a fit if we butchered a rabbit, so for right now, no rabbits for us. We recently bought 4 marans hens, 3 months old. DS decided the black one (got 3 white and 1 black) was his, so guess she's safe from the stew pot.
Re: My rabbits
When I try to post pix or links I am prompted that I can't until I have been on the board for 7 days.
Re: My rabbits
There are things that I've tried to do here, like use the search, or click on top posters for the day that I can't do. Haven't tried to post pics cuz I can't figure out how to!

Here is the way I do it:
First I re-size my photo that is on my computer to no larger than 600 - 400 Pixels. I do this with the "paint" program on my computer, (I'm sure there are other programs that will work for re-sizing too)
Then I upload my re-sized picture to on of my albums in "Photo Bucket" which is a photo hosting site.
Then I click on "Direct Link" under the picture I want to post here and copy the link to my clip board by pressing the keys Ctrl and C at the same time.
Then back to this site I click on the icon at the top of the page and paste the link in the box that appears by pressing Ctrl and V keys and click Ok.
The picture posts just like this:
Once you do it it is very easy.

I do not find where to change that. It may be a forumotion thing rather than something we can change.

Re: My rabbits
I am stuck at work, but my wife just called, and said my rabbit that was due to kindle, did. She must have just done it, because my wife checked when she got home from church, and nothing. She checked just a bit ago, and babbies. I don't know how many yet, but I will keep you posted.
I will not be back online(after 5pm today) , until Thursday, when I come back to work. They don't pipe the internets to where I live.
God bless, Chad

I have been looking into that, trying to fit it into my budget.
Re: My rabbits
If you read my blog you know that I was tring to decide if I like the external mounted nest box or a nest box that is just placed in the cage. Well I have decided! I do NOT like the external nest box. I can't look into it to see the baby rabbits. I still do not know how many babies I have. All I can see is the fur nest the mommy made. I promise as soon as I can see them I will post some pix of them.

Re: My rabbits
I was finally able to get in to count my bunnies. I counted 6, but there may be more I am not sure. My other doe should kindle any day now. I checked this morning, and nothing yet, but today "should" be the day. I will keep you posted.
God bless,
Chad
P.S. These are in a diffrent style of nest box, so getting pix and a good count should be easy.

Nesting boxes on the outside are great if the design of the hutch is so that you can open it and see inside. In fact I like them better than one on the inside of the cage. Here are some pictures of one I designed and built.
The top lifts off easily, but with the roofing it is heavy enough that the rabbits cannot get it off. I also has to be lifted straight up or it wont come off.
My daughter packs them with a lot of straw and the rabbits love it. They burrow their way right back in and it keeps the plenty warm no matter how cold it is outside.
The bottom of the boxes also can be lifted out for easy cleaning. Just thought you might like to see this in case you ever decided to build one it would give you an idea. I think these work great.
Congratulations on your new baby bunnies. I am looking forward to seeing pictures especially when they get some fur and start moving around.

Re: My rabbits
I like the looks of that Rohn. I may modify the hutch I have that has the box on the outside to be like that when the babies are out of it.
Re: My rabbits
Still no babies from my second doe that was supposed to kindle. At least none as of last night after church. I felt her belly, and didn't feel any movement, so I am begining to think she didn't take. I am still very new at this, so maybe I could have noticed before now, but oh well. I will give her a couple more days, and if there are still no little ones I will put her back with a buck. I know she has kindled before because I had 2 of her offspring. Maybe I should have rebreed her the next day. I will have to read up on how to tell if she took or not, so I don't make this mistake again.

Re: My rabbits
We are also new to raising rabbits. Having said that I have "Stories Guide to Raising Rabbits." In that book they say to put the doe in with the buck and after he has done his work wait 8 hours and put her in again. They say that this helps to make sure she gets bred.
Our doe had babies a little over a month and a half ago but non of them lived. we aren't sure why. We think she is now ready to have some again but we are not sure.

Yeah, I found out about the wait 8 hours thing, but it was to late for this go around. I will do that from now on though.
If you lost a litter, I was told to take a propane torch, and burn all the hair from inside the nest box. Even if it looks like there are no hairs. If the momma smells death in the nest she may eat the new litter. At least that is what I was told.
Re: My rabbits
Just a quick update on my rabbits.
The doe that was supposed to kindle never did, so I rebreed her. I did the whole wait 8 hours thing, so I hope she took this time. I read that you can wait a week or 2, and try to rebreed, and if she is breed she will not let the buck mount her. So I am going to try that.
Out of my litter of little ones, they are now comming out of the nest box, and starting to eat hay. The little runt died, it was able to get out of the nest box one day, but wasn't able to get back in. I found it on the wire the next morning. I suppose it got too cold. So now I am down to 7. I told my uncle I would give him 2 when they get old enough to eat (as payment for him hatching my chickens), so thta will leave 5 for the freezer. I can't wait I can taste them already!!

Re: My rabbits
Well as you all know I Have a doe that did not produce the last time I bread her, so I rebread her useing the wait 8 hours and rebreed method. Well, she didn't produce this time either. Today I doubled her feed to start fattening her up for the table. with the amount of food I have given her over the time I have had her it will be a VERY expensive meal!
I just thought I would update you all.
God bless,
Chad
