Hunting wild hogs? Empty Hunting wild hogs?

Post by Harvey_Birdman Sat Mar 23, 2013 12:31 am

Wild hogs are a nusince critter in most of the country. Here in east KY we only have a few pockets of them at the moment, but just a couple of good years for undergrowth can turn a few small pockets into a problem.

I had been thinking about buying a hog feeding it to market weight, and putting it into the freezer. That is until I talked to a few people that have eaten the wild hogs. I was told to go for the younger ones (not the babies, but young adults) and they are nearly as good as a farm raised hog. This makes me think I will take up hog hunting. The cost of some fuel for my side by side, some beef jerky, some hog bait, and a bullet is just a little more than the price of 50# of feed. The bonus is I get to go hunting! And they are open season all year!

A little history lesson: My Papaw told me that folks around here would buy a breeding pair of hogs, mark their ears, and tunr them loose in the hills. The hogs were left to do their buisness, and once the pigs were weaned they would collect them and fatten them to market weight. As I am sure you are all thinking " I bet they lost a lot of hogs" Well they did, and that is why we have wild hogs here now.

So do any of you hunt wild hogs? Are they an issue where you live? How do you hunt them? Do you bait? How?

God bless,
Chad
