Pig Shortage

Post by amybyrd21 on Wed Sep 26, 2012 10:19 am

Have any of yall read about the pig shortage. Hubby was reading about a shortage of pigs due to a shortage of feed. So now he is thinking about getting more hogs. They are saying by next year hog prices will be the roof. I dont know if this is just another government thing or the real deal but they are saying pork pirces will go sky high.

I've heard the same thing about beef. With two years of drought conditions feed is going up and some are struggling to feed their livestock.

Makes me wish more and more for more land so I could raise meat other than chickens.

dizzy, have you considered raising goats? I only have 2 acres, so I'm limited on what I can raise. Due to health issues, I opted for a small dairy goat breed, the nigerian dwarf. They don't give as much milk as your full size goats, but have a wonderful, creamy, milk. If things get too bad we could butcher some of the bucks to add another meat to our diet, but with the milk we can make cheese to supplement.

Re: Pig Shortage

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of land and am not zoned for farm animals. I have my horses and chickens at a friend's farm and am there everyday to care for them. I do have 2 goats at home, but they're basically pets. My daughter got them when she was in 4-H and I'm lucky the neighbors don't complain about them. Otherwise, I'd have to take them out to the farm as well.

I've been praying for my own farm for quite some time now, but land is very expensive in NJ. I'd like to move out of state, but my parents are getting up there in years, and I don't want to move too far from them. Add to that hubby's job, and for now, I'm stuck.

I understand. We live in a subdivision, but it's a small town and as I said, each lot is right at 2 acres. There's nothing in the covenant about farm animals, but before I bought my chickens I asked neighbors if a rooster would bother them. All of them loved the idea of having a rooster in the neighborhood. Then when we got the goats, I didn't ask, but most of our neighbors love our little 4 legged kids. Since we got chickens and goats some of our other neighbors have gotten some too. Those that don't always ask how they are doing.

You're supposed to have 1.5 acres here to have any animals-we have about 1/2 an acre. But a lot of people have animals. As long as the neighbors don't complain, no one really says anything. I did have my chickens at home for awhile, then Rosie turned out to be Ralph and the neighbors did NOT want a rooster around, so they're at the farm.

So when Ralph would croon...

LOL happens a lot

Three years ago, after 17 years of prayer, and hope, and dreaming, and on and on and on, The Lord blessed us with the means and opportunity to buy 12 acres. It was abused and neglected for at least 12 years, but we are making a go of it.

Keep praying, in His time His will, will be done

As for the shortage, I see things being partly drought related, but also lay blame at the EPA. Why on earth would any society convert its food supply (corn) into fuel just because...

I heard on the news not too long ago that some countries are not going to be using corn for fuel any longer since it's not doing what they expected plus taking away a needed food source. Whether there's any truth to that or not, I don't know. I couldn't find anything on the web.
