I feel a famine, of sorts, is looming. Food will be available, if you can afford it. Think gathering your own from natural "wild" sources will see you through? Maybe...

and maybe not. Gardening is great for all but fats and proteins. Well some grains have proteins and here are a few:

Soy beans are a good source protein here are some heirloom types: (and some good reading)

Soybeans are tolerant of drought and poor soil since they affix nitrogen in the soil as other legumes. They will, however, benefit from fertile soil.

Other grains having a protein content worth mentioning are:

Wheat http://www.growseed.org/seed.html
quinoa http://www.victoryseeds.com/quinoa_shelly-25.html
barley http://www.bountifulgardens.org/prodinfo.asp?number=GBA-7220&gclid=CJDth4urkbICFcY7OgodzgwAxw

and many others. Just search out what you will eat, or more accurately what you do eat, and raise your own. Try a small plot of something new next year, you might have a new favorite.

Good advice. I usually keep dried beans on hand for the protein content. I know that soybeans do well here, but not a big fan of them.

Some wheat varieties have a high protein content, as does quinoa. (up to 23%) Dried beans are a staple in our home.

We have wheat berries, but haven't planted any. Maybe we can get some winter wheat in this year.
